Jacob Forshaw, University of Oxford (a geology student)
Perm, its surrounding areas and Siberia are fantastic places to visit for both geological and cultural regions. I never imagined I would visit Russia and now can see myself going back in the near future to visit friends I made on the internship.
Spending two weeks in Siberia gave me a chance to visit several active mines and apply the geology I knew to a more practical situation. Furthermore, panning for gold was an exciting new activity for me which lead to some new experiences in the lab including using an SEM to analyse composition. Being accompanied by Russian professors, who translated the material in these sessions, gave us a greater insight into the scientific community in Russia.
Having toured several active mines, I have gained an insight into their operations and I may now consider pursuing a career within this industry.
