PSU Improves Sustainable University Status in UI GreenMetric 2021

On 14 December 2021, the UI GreenMetric has announced the World University Rankings Results and Awards. The ceremony took place online in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to the Ranking, Perm State University (PSU) has moved up from 446 to 428 place, globally.


For two years already, PSU has been ranked 16th among the total of 54 Russian universities, having participated in the ranking for two years in a row. On the European scale, PSU takes 132 place. According to UI in GreenMetric’2021 Global Ranking, PSU shows the following results:

Total Score – 5850
Transportation – 1175
Education & Research- 1150
Waste – 1125
Energy & Climate Change – 1025
Setting & Infrastructure – 825
Water – 550

In 2021, the UI GreenMetric World Ranking was attended by 956 universities from 80 countries around the world. Informally, according to a feedback by UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 154 world universities fall into the Gold Cluster category, 435 universities are in the Silver Cluster category, and 367 universities are in the Bronze Cluster category: https://www.uinjkt.ac.id/ui-greenmetric-2021-uin-jakarta-achieve-the-2021-most-sustainably-improved-university-status

At the global level, the five highest rankings were respectively achieved by Wageningen University & Research (Netherland), University of Nottingham (UK), University of Groningen (Netherlands), Nottingham Trent University (UK), University of California, Davis (USA).

According to UI GreenMetric vision, regardless of the existing rankings, a need for a uniform system addressing the problems of sustainability and environmental impact allowed them to launch a new ranking, marking universities’ ability to reach Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), since 2010.

In their present greetings letter, the UI GreenMetric team has stated that the rankings participants “have successfully demonstrated improvement in their university strategic measures to achieve SDGs in all aspects of their university activities… to create the most sustainable world campuses.”

PSU Re-Establishes Positions in International Rankings

Round University Ranking (RUR) and Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings have renewed the lists of globally acclaimed universities, with Perm State University re-establishing its competitive status.  

According to RUR, Perm State University (PSU) has raised up from 481 to 380 place in Humanities. PSU shows most significant progress in “Educational Activity” (248 to 128 place) and “Scientific Activity” (549 to 494 place). On a national level, PSU takes 13th place in Humanities, incl. 9th place in “Education”, and 12th place in “Scientific Activity”: https://roundranking.com/ranking/subject-rankings.html#world-humanities-2021

In Social Sciences, PSU has moved up internationally from 658 to 632 place, demonstrating the growth in “Scientific Activity” (706 to 668 place) and “Financial stability” (363 to 314 place). Staying 35th  nationally, PSU has made a few steps up in “Scientific Activity” (44 to 32 place), and a couple steps down in “Educational Activity” (38 to 42) : https://roundranking.com/ranking/subject-rankings.html#world-social-2021   

The Round University Ranking (RUR) had been set by a Russian development team and is based on international data collected annually from more than 800 leading universities in the world from 75-80 countries by 20 unique indicators and 4 key areas (teaching, research, international diversity, financial sustainability). All raw data for RUR Rankings is provided by Thomson Reuters. RUR Rankings cover the period from 2010 to the present.

On 19 October, 2021, PSU has also been ranked 501+ in the 2022 Times Higher Education Emerging Economies University Rankings.

Last year, PSU has improved it’s performance in Times Higher Education (THE, UK), and keeps in several areas: teaching quality, research activities, and contribution to innovation. In addition to the mentioned criteria, THE assesses universities in terms of citation index, share of foreign students and foreign teachers. In total, to compile the rating, the experts take into account thirteen indicators.

A total of 48 Russian universities were included in the top list, in 2022. Initially, PSU appeared in THE Ranking in 2017.

Times Higher Education (THE), formerly The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES), is a weekly magazine based in London, reporting specifically on news and issues related to higher education. It is the United Kingdom’s leading publication in its field. The ranking place is compiled on the basis of data from three sources: statistical information from universities, a bibliometric database of Scopus and a survey of academic experts.

PSU Jumps High in Round University Ranking, Improves Financial Stability

Round University Ranking (RUR), in collaboration with Clarivate Analytics, has published a subject ranking in Natural Sciences. Perm State University (PSU) has taken 49th place, nationally, and the 1st territorially, having improved its position by 52 lines compared to last year.

PSU has improved its performance in such criteria as education and research. As for financial sustainability, it did jump ahead from 634 to 253 place.

The number of participants in the ranking in Natural Sciences has grown significantly since 2014 from 411 universities to 729. Russia has increased its presence in this subject ranking almost six times: from 11 universities in 2014 to 62 in 2021.

PSU is also known to enter the RUR in the field of Technical Sciences.

PSU Retains Position in THE Rankings 2021, Improves Score in Teaching

In 2021, Perm State University (PSU) has demonstrated a solid stable position in the Times Higher Education (THE, UK) Emerging Economies Rankings, saving its place in the 500+ group. A total of 48 Russian universities were included in the top list. According to the recent ranking, via year PSU has raised the score in Teaching (from 18,1 to 19,2 points). Other leading scores include Industry Income (38,8) and International Outlook (16,7), with a growth in Research (9,9).

“Perm State University has been in this ranking for four years in a row. Considering that in 2021 the number of competitive universities increased to 606, maintaining previous positions requires efforts from all the participants, increasing performance,”

Initially, PSU appeared in THE Ranking in 2017. In 2020, it improved performance in several areas: teaching quality, research activities, and contribution to innovation. In total, to compile the rating, THE experts take into account thirteen indicators. In addition, PSU is known to show progress in Physical Sciences, as well as a separate THE ranking assessing sustainable development goals by the United Nations (UN).
