Mathematicians Discuss Future of Global Artificial Intellect

In October, 2022, the 8th All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Artificial Intelligence at Solving Actual Social and Economic Problems of the 21st Century” united scholars from Perm, Moscow, Chelyabinsk, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Donetsk and Volgograd.

Alexander Losev, Head of the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies , Volgograd State University , analyzed the experience of using artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics. Lev Vorobyov, post-graduate student of Donetsk National Technical University, shared his ideas and plans of  solving the related tasks in linguistics.

Aleksey Mezentsev, lecturer at the Department of Information Security and Communication Systems, PSU, accompanied by Alexandra Silina, lecturer at Perm College of Industrial and Information Technologies regarded previously unknown properties of neural networks to assign regulations of technological parameters within production processes – ensuring minimal negative defects and maximum quality of manufactured products.

Andrey Kuznetsov, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU, provided a report on efficient introduction of artificial intelligence technologies and its prospects.

Andrei Rabchevsky, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Information Security and Communication Systems, PSU, revealed the capabilities of neural network when compared to the brain, while Yuri Lipin, Associate Professor at Perm National Research Polytechnic University proved those tasks incorporating image recognition might be quite successfully solved without the use of neural networks. The Conference participants also discussed the opportunities of using diagnostic neural networks in engine building, subsoil use and medicine.

The advanced research in artificial intelligence by Perm scientists has been praised by Vadim Borisov, President of the Russian Association of Artificial Intelligence, Professor of the Department of Management and Intelligent Technologies at National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute”. According to Vadim Borisov, PSU scholars have been among the first ones to apply artificial intelligence methods in industry, economics, medicine, sociology, political science, forensics and sports.

Scholars Discuss Challenges Faced by Geographical Sciences

In October, 2022, the Department of Geography of Perm State University (PSU) held a round table “Modern Research in Geographic Systems” as part of the “Science and Global Challenges in the 21st Century” university-wide Forum. The Conference was organized by the Department of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology, PSU.

The Conference participants included university professors and staff from large Russian companies, with reports presented by teams of researchers from Perm, Saratov, Kirov and Moscow. The distinctive feature of the research activity had been its inter-disciplinary character, as the teams included mathematicians and philologists besides geographers.

The topics for reports have been urgent global issues requiring joint environmental, hydro-meteorological, and geography-based solutions. Anisya Lyadova, Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology, PSU, spoke about the tools and opportunities of preserving and developing the industrial heritage of the Urals. A group of scientists led by Sergey Kostarev, Associate Professor of the Department of Biogeocenology and Nature Conservation, PSU, investigated the case of formation of industrial wastewater discharged into paleokarst deposits.

Tatyana Subbotina, Associate Professor of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography, PSU, along with her colleagues studied extractions of a large urban center with a million-plus population, using the specific example of the city of Perm, Russia.

Evgeny Konyshev, acting Head of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography in a group of PSU scholars and colleagues from Vyatka State University studied the perception of the tourist and recreational space of the territory using text data analysis.

Professor Elena Polyanskaya and her team from the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, Saratov Chernyshevsky State University presented the studies of long-term forecasting of seasonal hydro-meteorological phenomena and the interaction of circulation structures in the northern hemisphere.

Scholars from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics and M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University analyzed the intraday population dynamics in natural and anthropogenic risks studies, using the example of the city of Moscow, Russia.

The Conference materials had been double-blind peer-reviewed by international and Russian scholars, and checked for plagiarism according to the required standards, with further results to be published in the “Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems” series by Springer, indexed in Scopus.

“Smart Solutions of Cities: East – West” International Competition: Applications Due to 30 Sept. 2022

The Eurasian Peoples’ Assembly under the support of the A.M. Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Foundation runs the international Competition “Smart Cities Solutions: East – West”.

The Competition aims to enable a comprehensive dialogue hub for expanding the network of international contacts between young scholars in Russia and the countries of the Middle East and North Africa. The Competition acquires at increasing the level of young scholars’ competencies in international scientific, technological and innovative cooperation in “smart” management and the use of urban life systems, following socially significant directions:

  • green cities;
  • urban regeneration;
  • safe cities;
  • accessible inclusive cities.

Young scientists (undergraduates, graduate students and non-degree researchers of higher educational institutions) from Russian Federation, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco are welcomed to take part. The international jury will have to select 5 Russian and 5 foreign projects.

The winners of the Competition receive diplomas and are provided with air tickets and accommodation for participation in the International Forum “Smart Cities Solutions: East-West”, which will be held in Belgorod on October 25-27, 2022.

To participate, young scientists submit their projects to the Organizing Committee in electronic form at smartcities@eurasia-assembly.org. The deadline for submitting competitive works is 30 September, 2022. The results will be announced on 10 October, 2022.

PSU Students Participate International Archeological School

Five students of the Department of History and Archeology, PSU – Maria Shmyrina, Andrey Smertin, Pavel Smertin, Anastasia Smertina and Artyom Nazarov took part in the 9th International Archaeological School on site of historical and architectural reserve in Bolgar, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

Throughout the School program, participants learnt to identify items found during excavation, trace ethnic and cultural influences, restore knowledge of old crafts, master methods of investigation, including nano-chemistry analysis, and train field conservation of archaeological objects.

Three students participated in the section “Restoration of Archaeological Objects”, and two students in “Paleoanthropology”, presenting following reports at the final Conference:

  • “Bone Hygiene Items from the Materials of Settlement Monuments in the Inva River Basin” by Maria Shmyrina;
  • “The Key Features of the Eneolithic cultures of the Forest Zone of Eastern Europe” by Anastasia Smertina;  
  • “Blacksmithing in the Upper Kama Territory (based on the materials of the medieval settlement and burial ground of Anyushkar)” by Andrey Smertin;
  • “The Peter and Paul Necropolis of the City of Perm: on the Issue of Paleontological Study of the Remains of the 2nd quarter of the 18th century” by Pavel Smertin.

“Not did we only manage to gain valuable knowledge and exciting practical experience, but also got acquainted with participants from different parts of Russia and abroad. If the study schedule allows, I would undertake such a trip again, especially in new areas of training within the School framework,”

admits Andrey Smertin.

“Under the guidance of experienced staff, we were entrusted to restore various bronze and lead objects, as well as ceramic vessels. We managed to eliminate traces of corrosion that distort the appearance of the object, as well as prevent their further active destruction,”

Maria Shmyrina shares her archaeological experience.

“At School, I met wonderful people from other cities and countries, too. It’s been quite a rewarding cultural exchange. Now I know a few words in Turkish and ways to cook Arabic desserts. I am also excited about the idea of going to the Chimgan Mountains, Uzbekistan. Next year, I’d like to spend much more time gaining skills for my research,”

says Artyom Nazarov.

About the Faculty of History and Political Science

The Faculty of History and Political Science at PSU was born in 1960, initially as a joint with other University departments. In Soviet Russia, the Faculty was the first to switch to simultaneous study of both the world and national history. In 1996, the Faculty was transformed into the Faculty of History and Political Science, becoming the first one in the Russian history to prepare specialists in political science.

Among the first in the world, the Faculty opened a scientific and educational center for digital humanities, using IT tools to create virtual museums, preserving historical and cultural heritage. The Faculty has extended links abroad, primarily due the Center for Comparative Historical and Political Studies, founded in 2012.  

Throughout years of research activity, several hundred archaeological sites of various cultures were found in Ural region, covering all stages of the development of the material culture of the ancient population from the Paleolithic to modern times.

Since 2008, the Faculty hosts annual scientific forums aimed at young researchers – the Russian Assembly of Young Political Scientists and the All-Russian Conference of Young Scientists, Graduate and Post-Graduate Students “Russia and the World in late XIX – early XX century.”

The Faculty of History and Political Sciences is the only university department in Russia to publish three specialized academic journals included into the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles list.

PSU Biologist Reports at Global Fishery Forum

Mikhail Baklanov, Head of the Department of Vertebrate Zoology and Ecology, Faculty of Biology, PSU presented his research in Aquatic Bio-Resources and Aquaculture in St. Petersburg, Russia.

PSU scholar took part in the round table “Will ‘Generation Z’ Go Fishing? The Problems of Education and Science”, as a part of the IV Global Fishery Forum and Seafood Expo Russia.

Experts in all areas of the fishing industry took part in the event – fishing and processing companies, aquaculture and mariculture enterprises, developers of equipment for processing, fishing, shipbuilding, repair and equipment, food and additives’ manufacturers.

“Attracting young people to fish farming is possible on several terms. Transformation of job placements is crucial if we want workers to stay healthy, helping them fulfil their creative potential. So, digitalization and robotization of technological process looks like a necessary and attainable solution. State bodies and big businesses have already started to actively move into this direction, due to an acute shortage of qualified specialists,”

shares Mikhail Baklanov.

Ichthyology is one of the strongest points and key areas of research at the Faculty of Biology, Perm State University. Since 1936, more than 1,000 thousand people became graduates in ichthyology. Regardless of the specific field, all of them are multi-task specialists universals, capable of working at science and research institutions, as well as involved in fish farming, rational fishing and nature conservation.

April Theses Bloom at PSU

The identity of rock musicians in the USSR, women in the medicine of Antiquity, Icelandic sagas and the phenomenon of identity in Perestroika era movies became topics of choice, among many, at the recent April Theses international student conference at Perm State University.

“The April Theses: A Person in Topical Tocio-Humanitarian Research” Conference took place on 2-3 April, 2021, organized by the Department of History and Archeology, the Department of Interdisciplinary Historical Research, as well as the Student Scientific Society at the Faculty of History and Political Science, PSU.

Participants from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia (Perm, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Kemerovo, Yaroslavl, Ufa, Smolensk, Petrozavodsk, Ivanovo) presented their reports, delivered both in Russian and English on a wide range of topics. Naturally, according to anti-COVID-19 safety measures, the Conference took place online.

“It’s felt quite pleasant to be a part of the event, largely due to the benevolent and positive atmosphere. I liked the variety of topics presented, covering a wide variety of aspects of history, politics and society. I believe such conferences to be a necessary element in young researchers’ progress,”

states Vadim Lyashenko, 3rd year student, Ukrainian State University of Railway Transport (Ukraine).

The April Theses Conference became an annual forum for students and young scientists, aimed to support the students’ research activity, providing conditions for their professional and academic progress in social sciences and humanities. Following the results of the conference, a collection of student papers is going to be published.

International Forum “Science and Global Challenges of the 21st Century”: Call for Papers

Which tasks and challenges do science, education and society have to deal with in the face of globalization? How do we eliminate threats and manage risks? From 18 October till 23 November, 2021, PSU will host the autumn session of the Perm International Forum “Science and Global Challenges of the 21st Century” – in search of these and many more answers.

“The main advantage of the Forum is its cross-disciplinary character, enabling the joint research and overcoming obstacles between scientists – the principle incorporated since its very start. Back in the days, the first Forum launched with a round table on the origin of the Universe – inviting philosophers and theologists to take part along with mathematicians,”

comments Andrey Kuznetsov, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU.

The Forum program feature events of various scale: international conferences and lectures, scientific and research schools, pop-sci talks. In 2021, young scientists are to discuss artificial intelligence, development of natural processes, bioinformatics, innovation and technology.

“Another feature of the Forum is that articles meeting the Springer Proceedings Guidelines for Authors, will be published in its “Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies” series, as well as submitted for indexing in Scopus. The articles in English must be submitted by 1 June, 2021”,

PSU Expert Speaks on World after Pandemic

On 19-20 February, international scholars from Russian universities and abroad are discussing the world after the COVID-19 pandemic – forecasting the future through the prism of politics, security, economy and culture – as a part of International Conference and Inter-University Scientific Discussion Club “Expert”, led by Kuban State University (Russia).

The conference is set within the frame of Jean Monnet “POWERS: War and Peace in the Challenges of European Security” network project, allowing scholarly dialogue on most relevant issues, in which COVID-19 played a notorious role. The project is supported and co-funded by the European Union Erasmus + Program, and also marks the centennial of Kuban State University. PSU acts as one of the principle contributors to the Program, until 2024.

The Conference is organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Kuban State University (KubSU), Krasnodar Regional Branch of the Association for European Studies (AEVIS), Perm State University (PSU), Voronezh State University (VSU).

The international speakers include Dr. Michael Powell, Frederick Community college (Maryland, USA); Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Martin Tamcke, University of Göttingen (Georg-August-Universität, Germany); Prof. Paolo Bargiacchi, Professor of International Law, Faculty of Economics and Law, Kore University of Enna (Italy).

As a co-organizer, invited expert and speaker, Dr. Liubov Fadeeva, Professor of Political Science Department, PSU (Russia) has opened the plenary session with the report on securitization of identity policy.

The concept of securitization considers the elevation of an object to the rank of a security threat, which gradually increases significance and becomes a tool of the state policy. The way we understand identity might naturally become the subject of securitization. Answering questions like “What are we?”, “What are we proud of, what are the roots of our values?”, “What should we resist?” we use them as trigger for ideology.

Manifesting themselves in shapes of heated discussions, debates, conflicts of recollections, cultural confrontation, the issues of memory and identity have been widely reflected in academic papers and speeches of political leaders. According to Dr. Lyubov Fadeeva, “recently, there has been a tendency of defining identity politics as a specific ideological weapon that might be used against opponents in ideological and political struggle. This significantly changes the meanings of identity politics.”

The challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, causing political, economic and social upheavals, forced scholars and practicing experts to face a new task: analyzing the processes of shaping national identity, security system, and external communication. The participation of experts from Germany, Italy and the USA, as well as a wide range of Russian scholars, have granted the Conference a comprehensive cross-disciplinary character.
