Scientists from Russia and Belarus Discuss Chemistry in Education, at PSU

The Faculty of Chemistry at PSU has initiated the 6th Prikamie (Perm Territory) Congress of Chemistry Teachers, titled “Continuing Chemistry Education as a Tool to Overcome Modern Challenges”. For four days, off- and online, chemistry school teachers and university staff from all over Russia and the Republic of Belarus are discussing the challenges and perspectives of modern chemical education.

The Congress unites several key partners, to name the Faculty of Chemistry at Moscow State University, the Association of Teachers of Chemistry, the “Chemistry at School” Magazine, the Petroleum+ Perm School #102, award-winning teachers and experts in chemistry. The Congress provides a broad overview of online resources for schools, colleges and higher educational institutions, as well as  explores students’ progress in chemical science using competitive environment and dedicated study groups.

“For the Perm Territory, which has been long associated with “big chemistry”, the objective of training highly qualified personnel for the chemical industry is especially important. Teachers of chemistry play an important role in that process. For a number of years, the Congress has been bringing together experts and industry professionals, teachers and students of various levels – serving a platform for sharing established practices, discussing challenges and prospects in chemical education,”

states Professor Irina Mashevskaya, Congress organizer, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU.

Earlier in 2021, Counselor of Republic of Belarus, paid a visit to Perm State University (PSU). Mr. Vitaly Voytik, Adviser on Trade and Economic Issues, Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Yekaterinburg met Dr. Dmitry Krasilnikov, PSU Rector to discuss cooperation with scientific and industrial bodies of Belarus, stating education as one of the key priorities for such interaction in the future.

Besides education, possible cooperation in chemistry involves technical solutions in ecology and agriculture. About 40% of global potash salts are being produced in Belarus and Russia, and so does bring their industries closer. The Republic of Belarus lays special emphasis on cooperation with the Perm Territory, since the official signing of the cooperation agreement in 2016. Since that time, the trade turnover between Belarus and Perm territories raised up to $ 500,000,000.

“The Republic of Belarus is becoming an important partner of the Perm Territory. This opens up wide opportunities for both PSU and Belarusian enterprises. The University acts as a key member of the Perm Scientific and Educational Center “Rational Subsoil Use”, as well as the Photonics Competence Center, creating an extensive scientific and industrial base for international cooperation. As the IT sphere is extensively developed in Belarus and Perm, the interaction of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU with Belarusian colleagues offers new prospects in artificial intelligence research,”

First International Pharmacists Graduate PSU

Three students from Iraq, the first international graduates in Pharmacy, have received diplomas from Perm State University (PSU) – marking the start of 2022 with a bright spot in their academic career.

Today, PSU is proud to be the only ‘classical’ university in Russia to teach Pharmacy – besides a greater variety of faculties and courses, both science and arts. Although PSU has had a long tradition of teaching chemistry and medicine back a century ago, after a long break it revised the “Pharmacy” Program in Russian language since 2016, and in English since 2017. The first international graduates in Pharmacy, using the English language fully, will graduate PSU in 2022.

“We are eager to expand the geography of admission of international students for the Pharmacy  program. I believe, the competences gained through the course will be in demand, globally.  The graduates of our Faculty surely have an advantage, as their knowledge and skills are a joint result of a classical fundamental approach meeting modern applied techniques,”

comments Irina Mashevskaya, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU.

PSU students in Pharmacy learn to test the pharmacological activity of drugs, study their manufacture, develop strategies for their promotion on the market, and even build pharmaceutical enterprises.

According to our graduate Al-Zeyad Ali (Iraq), he chose the pharmaceutical course at Perm State University intentionally: “My Dad is a biologist and also an analytical chemist. My Mom is a veterinarian. Our family runs our own lab for analysis, so many people advised me to study pharmaceuticals. After my graduation here in Russia, I will spend another study year in Iraq in order to confirm my degree, in my native language. I will definitely work in a pharmacy or in a hospital. If I decide to continue my studies, it will be the veterinary medicine, since I tend to like this particular profession. Overall, I hope to lend a hand to my parents, and thank them for everything they have invested in me throughout my life.”

PSU Chess Team Sets New Records

PSU team has become a winner in the ChessUni WCLeague international chess tournament, at the start of November, 2021. In 100 minutes, PSU participants scored 217 team points, beating the MSU teams, MIPT, as well as universities from England, Scotland, USA and Canada.

On 13-14 November, Moscow hosted the full-time final of the ACC of Russia “Your Move” chess project. There, nine chess players from different faculties represented Perm State University.

Artem Polonsky, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics, PSU, a coach of the Univer Sports Club chess team, took 1st place in the All-Russian competition. This is Artem’s first victory in face-to-face competition, on a national scale. Vladimir Gein, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU has also entered the Top 4, being defeated by the champion and the vice-champion, only.

“This is a historic step for the PSU Sports Club. Recently, we have won several prizes and even topped in online tournaments, of various statuses. It has been extremely important to us to ‘convert’ our online success into a real competition, approving the overall progress. We regard it as a success of the whole chess sport at Perm State University, rather than an individual achievement,”

PSU Chemists Invent New Materials, Get International Patents

By the end of autumn 2021, PSU scholars will patent 6 inventions in pharmacy and industrial chemistry, internationally.

Researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry, Perm State University have developed substances with antimicrobial activity and ways of their production – patenting new bioactive substances, pharmaceutical compositions and dosage forms.

“The Faculty of Chemistry, empowered by qualified experts in organic chemistry and pharmacology, as well as modern research equipment, allow us to conduct in-depth pharmacological studies of potential medical drugs,”

comments Dr. Irina Mashevskaya, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry.

Another group of researchers has developed a way to use a new corrosion inhibitor – a chemical compound that significantly reduces the rate of corrosion. PSU chemists are planning to develop technologies for the production, storage and use of hydrogen and carbon dioxide utilization issues.

“To convert our research into products, offering it for public use and private enterprises, attracting  industrial partners, participating in Research and Technological Development competitions, it is necessary for our results to be protected by patents, nationally and internationally,”

says Dr. Irina Mashevskaya.

Part of the research is carried out within the framework of the “Rational Subsoil Use” Perm Scientific and Educational Center. In charge of the patent registration is the Metrology and Patenting Office, being a part of the Department of Scientific and Innovative activities, PSU. PSU organics, physicists, pharmacologists and pharmaceutical technologists have always been leaders in patent and licensing activity at Perm State University. In total, researchers of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU have filed 48 patent applications in 2021.

University of Kansas Scholar Gives Open Lectures at PSU

PSU teaching staff and students have joined a series of online lectures by Mikhail Rubin, Associate Professor at the University of Kansas (Lawrence, USA), which will last due to 25 October, 2021.

Within the course, Mikhail Rubin is going to concentrate on modern approaches in the analysis and quality control of products within chemical, oil and gas, and pharmaceutical industries. The lectures are designed for students, graduate students, teachers and researchers of the Faculty of Chemistry. Interested scholars of related programs are also invited to take part.

“Our research group started implementing scientific projects in cooperation with Mikhail Rubin back in 2012. Not only does our activity include lectures on relevant fields of research, but also enables internships for our graduate and postgraduate students at the University of Kansas,”

says Professor Andrey Maslivets, head of the project, head of the Department of Organic Chemistry, PSU.

The lectures united under the title “Solving structural problems of organic chemistry using instrumental methods of analysis” are available on the Zoom platform and held in Russian. All lectures start at 4:30pm Perm time (2:30 Moscow time, 11:30 UTC) on the following dates: 29 September; 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 18, 20, 22 and 25 October.

International Student Shares His Story of Helping Tragedy Victims «I used my clothes as a bondage and called for the first aid»

Ashraf Razuk (Iraq), a 3rd year student in Pharmacy, Faculty of Chemistry, PSU was one of the first to help the wounded. On 20 September, the student was walking across the Perm State University campus, when the shooting began.

As he saw a girl falling down, the student immediately rushed towards her: “It turned out, she wasn’t injured – just very scared. I loaded her on my shoulders and carried behind the building’s corner, where it was safe.”

After that, Ashraf noticed another victim – a young man, wounded in his leg. Using his clothes, Ashraf bandaged him and called the ambulance.

“Then, someone told me that my friend was wounded – they showed where he was, so I run there to check, and approached a paramedic,”

recollects Ashraf Razuk.

Ashraf’s injured friend happened to be Abdullah Obaid, another student in chemistry from Iraq. During the classes’ break, he strolled by the University fountain. When the shots happened, Abdullah protected the girl standing next to him, covering her with his body. The student received gunshot wounds to both legs. Abdullah was given initial treatment in Perm, and then transferred to a hospital in Moscow.

Perm State University is grateful to everyone who showed courage and provided help and support to those in trouble. We know there were more people on campus who did their best to protect the others!

First Graduates in Pharmacy Exit PSU

The first group of pharmacists has graduated from Perm State University (PSU), where they learned how to develop, manufacture and register new medical products, analyze drugs and draw up a business plan for a private pharmaceutical enterprise.

Graduates of the Faculty of Chemistry build further careers as drug production technologists, researchers in pharmacology, pharmacists, as well as work in forensic and medical examination centers. Some of the students have started working while studying at the University.

“While studying, our students passed an internship at the Medisorb (Медисорб) JSC Pharmaceutical Company, a great place to drill skills for future specialists. Local pharmacies and pharmaceutical production also served as worthy placements,”

admits Pyotr Mashchenko, Acting Head, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, Faculty of Chemistry, PSU.

Recently, the Faculty has opened applications for 14 budget (state-funded) and contract 60 (private paid) places in Pharmacy. Applications are due to 18 August, 2021.

PSU Scholar Announced Best at International Conference in Belarus

Anna Perminova, a PSU researcher from the Natural Science Institute, has presented her report, announced best, at the International Conference “Geographic Aspects of Sustainable Development of Regions” at Gomel State University (Belarus). Overall, there have been presented a total of 127 reports by 200 authors from Belarus, Germany, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine.

Researchers from the Laboratory of Biogeochemistry of Technogenic Landscapes, PSU, presented reports on transformation of the natural environment and rational use of natural resources, drawing the examples of the Verkhnekamskoye salt deposit, a local to Perm terrotory. Anna Perminova was supported by Elena Khairulina, head of the laboratory, and Natalia Mitrakova, senior researcher.

Among many research spheres, the Conference covered the problems of engineering geology, hydrogeology, geophysics; regularities of transformation of ecological functions of geospheres in large mining regions; the rational use of natural resources and environmental protection. The 4th International Scientific and Research Conference “Geographic Aspects of Sustainable Development of Regions” was organized by the Faculty of Geology and Geography, F. Skorina Gomel State University; Voronezh State University; the Russian House in Gomel and the Gomel Department of the Belarusian Geographical Society.
