In July 2020, the PSU Entrants Service Center was officially opened in China. The Center is located at Shandong University (Jinan Province, PRC).

Perm University invites international students to study three bachelor’s degree programs in English: the “International Business” and the “Information Systems and Big Data” courses are studied at the Faculty of Economics, PSU; the “Ecological Engineering and New Energy” is run by the Faculty of Geography, PSU.

PSU Applicants Service Center has a unique resource advantage: it is located on the central campus of Shandong University, which is a political, economic, cultural, technological, educational and financial center, as well as a transportation hub of the province.

The Center’s tasks include advising Chinese students at the stage of choosing a program and preparing admission documents for PSU, also providing information support before their arrival to Perm. The Center is going to expand further, taking into consideration the nine branches of Shandong in various provinces and cities of China.

“The International PSU Applicants Service Center has been jointly created by both China and Russia. We have long-standing partnerships with a number of universities in China. Not only that we didn’t stop cooperation with them during the pandemic, but, on the contrary, made even more efforts to develop it,”

says Vadim Gataulin, Head of the International Relations Department, PSU

PSU Graduate Receives Prestigious Award in Biology

Arkady Balushkin, a graduate of the Faculty of Biology, PSU, has been awarded the L.S. Berg Medal for outstanding work on morphology, taxonomy and historical biogeography of the Antarctic fish species.

Arkady Balushkin, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Head of the Laboratory of Ichthyology at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, graduated from PSU in 1971. Today he is the world’s leading expert on Antarctic ichthyofauna and an expert in the taxonomy and biogeography of many fish species all over the World Ocean.

Arkady described 47 new species for science and 17 new genera of bony fishes. As a result of many years of research in the Southern Ocean, Arkady Balushkin laid the foundations of the modern classification of fish. He studied the evolutionary and historical formation patterns of the suborder notothenium fishes – a group that took a dominant position among vertebrates in terms of number and taxonomic diversity in the vast water area of the south of our planet (about 20% of the World Ocean).

In the field of fish morphology, Arkady Balushkin described a number of new unusual organs among Antarctic fishes, including a completely unique one – supra-axillary swellings (convexitas superaxillaris), intended for the production and storage of antifreezes in Antarctic warthogs living in ice water.

Arkady Balushkin is the author and co-author of a number of books, collective monographs and catalogs. His list of academic writings comprises about 150 publications. In recognition of the scientist’s contribution to science and international collaboration with ichthyologists, six new fish species were named after him.

The L. S. Berg Gold Medal had been awarded since 1992 by the Russian Academy of Sciences for outstanding work in the field of geography, biogeography and ichthyology. The medal is named after Lev S. Berg, the Soviet zoologist and geographer.

International Students Assist PSU with French Wikipedia

Priscille Obli (Republic of Côte d’Ivoire), a student from the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, PSU, has prepared articles on Perm State University for a French-speaking segment of Wikipedia.

Priscille significantly expanded data on Université d’État de Perm, previously consisting of just a couple of lines. She also introduced articles on key figures of the University.

In addition, Priscille created the categories Professeur à l’université d’État de Perm (Perm University Teaching Professors) and Étudiant de l’université d’État de Perm (Perm University Graduates), which incorporate names previously published in French Wikipedia.

Being a Philology course student, Priscille Obli performed the task as a part of her internship in Media Communications.

“The publications are quite relevant. Today, dozens of students from French-speaking countries study at PSU – to name the Aix-Marseille Université, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) and Université de Nantes as the most frequent PSU partners,”

comments Alexey Pustovalov, internship tutor, Associate Professor oat the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications, PSU.

“We’ve also kept in mind, that Amnéville (France) is a twin city of Perm since 1992. So, we hope our update to French Wikipedia will be a worthy contribution to our Franсophone users,”

Alexey Pustovalov says.

As for the Russian-language Wikipedia, here PSU ranks third in the number of articles among Russian universities, following Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University.

PSU Student Shares Experience of Studying Russian Philology

What is it like to study in Perm? Why do international students consider PSU a special place? How far are newcomers’ expectations different from true Russia?

PSU is a choice for many international students to study Russian language. Some use it further to study various courses at Russian universities, others are attracted by the opportunity to become a philologist and, after graduating from the university, teach the Russian language in their home country. Li Shuang, a student from the city of Benxi (People’s Republic of China) has shared his experience of living and studying in Russia in an interview with the Perm University Newspaper.

What do you consider attractive about the Russian language and why did you decide to study it at PSU?

Since I became impressed with the works of Russian classical literature, I was desperate to read them in Russian, because in Chinese they do sound a bit different. Therefore, I decided to learn Russian at a professional level.

At first, I went to Ukraine and entered the Kharkov National University, but the events of 2014 and following unstable political situation in the country forced me to interrupt my studies and leave. Some time later, my brother entered the Faculty of Philology at PSU. After hearing from him for a while, his good impressions, you know, I decided to follow his example. So, I came here to study Philology.

How far is the system of higher education in China different from the Russian one?

Well, there is a difference. For instance, it is quite difficult to enter a university in China, but since you’re in, it is easy to study. In Russia, it is the opposite. Several of my friends entered Russian universities, yet, after while they refused to continue – so difficult it appeared, in fact. In China, this is rare. Perhaps, they had problems precisely because the teaching was in Russian.

It might be difficult for the Chinese to understand your language: while we are accustomed to hieroglyphics, here we need to operate with separate letters that make up the words. Moreover, the difficulty arises due to the phonetic characteristics of the Russian language – it is difficult for us to pronounce particular sounds, like “r”. The grammar is also difficult to understand, because some Russian words have many meanings.

What was most strange or surprising about PSU?

I was lucky entering the Faculty of Philology on the 100th anniversary of Perm State University. I was struck by the Centennial Festival in October 2016. We do have many holidays in China, yet I had never experienced a university anniversary celebrated on such a large scale.

I remember a huge stage next to the campus fountain, with bands performing until late midnight. Nearby, there was a street dance battle and the Wedding of the Century ceremony congratulating newlyweds, taking oaths to stay side by side for another 100 years. For the first time in my life, I saw a solid 100 kilo cake.

How do you spend your spare time, when free time from the studies?

I am fond of network computer games, like Dota2, CS: GO, or the World of Tanks. Due to this, I made many Russian friends. I enjoy moving around with my friends from the Faculty of Geography, PSU. Sometimes, we would stay in a forest or distant villages, overnight. I started closely appreciate the Russian nature, and was even introduced into herbal teas.

Do Chinese people have stereotypes about Russians?

In China, they believe that Russian men are strong enough to fight bears, and Russian girls to be the most beautiful in the world. I would half agree with that: Russian men are really strong, yet, I personally have not seen them fighting bears. The second statement is absolutely true. In addition, I would like to add, Russia is a very hospitable country – definitely a place to visit, that’s my personal recommendation.
