The Chinese Experience: Study Russian and Get New Job Prospects!

Why studying Russian brings you profits and boosts career? Some of our successful graduates know the answer! For, whatever disciplines you gain while studying abroad, besides new skills, you bring back home your knowledge about the foreign culture and its language. Why not make money from that?

22 international students out of 28 have been accepted to PhD programs of the Faculty of Philology at Perm State University (PSU), in 2021. 21 Chinese and 1 Japanese postgraduates will study Linguistics and Literary Studies – as 24 full-time students, and 4 part-time ones.

This is a small, yet meaningful record for the Faculty of Philology at PSU, which teaches a wider variety of courses – such as journalism, media communications, advertising and public relations, philology, pedagogics, informational and library studies, languages and literature criticism.

15 students came as future teachers of the Russian language from the Chengdu Institute of the Sichuan University of Foreign Languages. Notably, they were encouraged to apply by their young teaching professor Li Wenxu, who graduated from the Faculty of Philology, PSU in 2018.

“In their research, students from China particularly compare Russian and Chinese literature, examine the influence of the former on the latter, and study the literature of ‘eastern’ Russian emigration in 20th century,”

says Ekaterina Klyuikova, Deputy Dean for International Affairs, Faculty of Philology.

“Here at PSU, I learned to appreciate Russian military prose and rural writers. In Perm, I felt a real Russian spirit I missed to appreciate in the capital cities. The local culture brings us closer to nature and tradition,”

says Song Tianyao, PSU post-graduate student in Philology.

Academic exchanges and mobility programs with partner universities help to reduce the price of courses, studied at PSU. In 2021, the Ministry of Higher Education and Science of Russian Federation has provided scholarship support to four foreign citizens from Georgia, Columbia, Syria and Tajikistan.   

PSU School of Philology, founded in 1916 as a part of the Faculty of History and Philology, has passed a long way through transformation to the Faculty of Philology in 1960, and separation from modern foreign languages and literature in 2003, growing and getting recognition on national level, and beyond.  

During its century-long history the Faculty served a launch pad for more than 6000 graduates in philological sciences: linguists and journalists, publishers and literary critics, teachers and writers, media managers and specialists in public relations.

The Faculty partners with universities from China, Korea, Macedonia, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, France, Serbia, Yugoslavia, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and the Baltic countries – extending international collaborations in study and research.

PSU Launches Inter-Collegiate Volunteering Week

Got bright ideas? Like interaction? Looking for friends? The roundtable titled “Can a Foreign Student Be a Volunteer?” will take place on 30 November at 6pm, in Russian and English languages.

The roundtable, run by the Youth Project Office at PSU, is a part of a bigger venue called “DobroLIVE” – a place to learn about volunteering, join projects and share positive vibe in a great company.

The event aims to increase the level of knowledge in volunteering among students of Perm Territory. On 29 November – 5 December, the participants will meet experts, learn skills, play games, resolve group tasks, participate in sweepstakes, as well as enjoy a family house gathering, both on- and off-line.   

DobroLIVE is a part of the Priority 2030 Strategic Academic Leadership Program, which aims to form a wide group of universities urging to become leaders in creating new scientific knowledge, technologies and developments for implementation in the Russian economy and social sphere.

As part of the event, a recruitment of coordinators from educational institutions of Perm territory will take place. “We regard DobroLIVE as a platform for those who want to plunge headlong into volunteering and those who miss having good warm evenings in excellent company,” the organizers note.

Currently, there are about 300 international PSU students staying in Russia, and many more in Perm. Along with the Russian residents, they are invited to participate workshops and discussion groups of the Volunteering Week in Perm.

PSU Linguists Help Finnish Urban Activist, Contribute to International Perm Links

Jaakko Blomberg (Helsinki, Finland), a renowned Finnish artist who creates urban art-related projects, has visited Perm, in cooperation with the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art.

“I often just call myself urban activist and producer… Some of my activities are associated with urban space, some with art, some with culture, some with environmental issues, some with food. But everything is linked in some way to urban culture, people and community… I travel around to talk, inspire, generate ideas and organise workshops all over Finland and the world – exploring communal city culture, co-operation and different, open-minded ways of doing,”

Sergey Potkin, 3rd year student of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature performed as a guide and interpreter for the Finnish activist. Jaakko Blomberg’s attention was naturally drawn to Perm-local art objects and graffiti, raised from the grassroots.

“I’ve been conducting tours around Perm for some time, already. Some guests are interested in galleries, others – in theaters. I am always for museums, which put a light on the history of Perm and its citizens. From the city monuments, I like Permyak the Salty Ears, and the Legend of Perm Bear,”

says Sergey Potkin.

Being a passionate advocate of urban culture and artist himself, during the tour Jaakko Blomberg showed interest in local Perm graffiti. His attention was also drawn to the “Happiness’s Not Far Off” art installation – the huge top letters dominating a piece of embankment of the Kama river.

“Co-creation and better use of space are increasingly important factors in creating a better city and life. Technology provides us with a number of tools to reach out people, share resources and work together. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, but each case is different… The new urban culture is open-minded, quick, created with a minimal budget – and done by the community itself,”

Jaakko Blomberg is known as a founder of Kera-kollektiivi, founder of Kalasataman Vapaakaupunki, Executive Director of Helsinki Urban Art, Co-Founder of Konepaja-liike, Co-Founder of Jänö – vegaaninen lippakioski.

Jaakko’s visit to has been partly linked with Perm Museum of Contemporary Art (PERMM) – an art gallery in Perm, founded by gallerist Marat Gelman in 2009. Besides a train of exhibitions, the Museum holds festivals, artist talks, lectures, workshops, concerts and performances. In 2010, the Financial Times praised PERMM as “one of the most spectacular galleries of modern art in Russia.” “To be honest, Jaakko’s passion to contemporary art during the tour passed on to me, which I feel excited about and grateful for,” shares Sergei Potkin.

The Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages ​​and Literature at PSU traditionally acts as a link between young translators/interpreters and city enterprises, government institutions, social and cultural initiatives looking for international cooperation. “Not only does internship in translation help students to master their profession, but also connects them with a variety of experts, allowing them to sharpen skills and see prospects for future research,” emphasizes Natalya Khorosheva, Head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, PSU. “In turn, we feel our students are in demand at the city’s venues, contributing to international cultural agenda.”

Earlier in the spring of 2021, the book titled “Perm Collection” was published in Helsinki, which tells about the collection of the Museum of Perm Antiquities, in which teachers and students of the Department of Linguistics and Translation took part. In their letters of gratitude, many more institutions praised PSU students for “excellent knowledge of English and French, mastery of the basics of translation theory and practice, interdisciplinary outlook and willingness to provide comprehensive volunteer assistance.”

Later this month more students from the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, PSU will contribute to artists’ collaborations at PERMM art gallery. On 26-27 November, PERMM will present the first international conference “The Survival Environment. Strange Practices of Environmental Interaction”, with the support by the Goethe-Institut in Russia and the Higher School of Economics. PSU students will acquire to a dialogue of world experts in ecology and the Anthropocene, art historians, artists, architects, philosophers, biologists from Germany, Russia and more countries yet to come.

PSU and Leading Regional IT-Companies to Hire Interns, Using Draft Model

Internships is a great way to gain new experience, test knowledge and see prospects for your future profession. If you are capable of convincing practice-based experts in your worthy contribution to particular tasks, chances are great you will be hired. In autumn 2021, PSU students will be given chance to enflesh  their ambitions at the best local-based IT-companies, national and international ones, developing digital solutions.

First 30 registered students will enjoy the opportunity to sneak into an IT-draft pool, meeting a variety of IT-oriented enterprises – the PARMA Technologies Group, the Simpl-Group, the SEUSLAB (СЕУСЛАБ), the RIO Soft (РИО Софт), the Smart Analytics, the Bright Soft (Брайт Софт), the Trivium (Тривиум), the FORSIGHT (ФОРСАЙТ) and the Bureau of Information Technologies (Бюро информационных технологий).  

Students can put those whom they want to cooperate with in their priority lists. Candidates should fill out a questionnaire and prepare an oral self-presentation about themselves – so that IT companies’ representatives could choose the most suitable ones for further practical tasks. In return, the chosen candidates will learn from top teams of digital solutions’ developers. Students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Physics, Economics, as well as PSU College are welcomed to participate.

“The representatives of several companies at once will meet with a group of interested students. The practicing IT-professionals will tell about the tasks that trainees will have to solve,” says Dmitry Vershinin, Head of the Office for Internships, Department for Students’ Training, PSU. “In return, the students will introduce themselves, according to their study modules and faculties. Then the proposals for cooperation will follow – complying with the ‘draft’ concept in sports.”

A draft is known as a process to allocate certain players to teams. In a draft, teams take turns selecting from a pool of eligible players. When a team selects a player, the team receives exclusive rights to sign that player to a contract, and no other team in the league may sign the player. The process is similar to round-robin item allocation. “Having chosen a draft model, we very much hope that students will further find themselves in those leading teams engaged in digital solutions,” says Dmitry Vershinin.

The first Perm-based IT Draft in will take place on 25 November (Thursday), 4 pm (local time) at the AMAKS Premier Hotel (43 Monastyrskaya St., ground floor).

PSU Chess Team Sets New Records

PSU team has become a winner in the ChessUni WCLeague international chess tournament, at the start of November, 2021. In 100 minutes, PSU participants scored 217 team points, beating the MSU teams, MIPT, as well as universities from England, Scotland, USA and Canada.

On 13-14 November, Moscow hosted the full-time final of the ACC of Russia “Your Move” chess project. There, nine chess players from different faculties represented Perm State University.

Artem Polonsky, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics, PSU, a coach of the Univer Sports Club chess team, took 1st place in the All-Russian competition. This is Artem’s first victory in face-to-face competition, on a national scale. Vladimir Gein, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU has also entered the Top 4, being defeated by the champion and the vice-champion, only.

“This is a historic step for the PSU Sports Club. Recently, we have won several prizes and even topped in online tournaments, of various statuses. It has been extremely important to us to ‘convert’ our online success into a real competition, approving the overall progress. We regard it as a success of the whole chess sport at Perm State University, rather than an individual achievement,”

PSU Experts Participate Volga-Yangtze Youth Forum

Perm State University discussed the prospects for scientific cooperation between universities in Russia and China at the Volga-Yangtze Youth Forum. At the Forum, PSU students and teachers presented several reports, covering the history of Perm Society of Friendship with China, the creation of tourist routes for Chinese students and the creation of a common academic network.

“During the preparation for the Forum, we worked closely with the Ministry of Tourism and Youth Policy of the Perm krai. The projects of our University were highly appreciated. In the future, we plan to hold a series of events to discuss the plan and algorithm for the implementation of projects that were developed at the Forum,”

The Forum, which lasted 2 days, consisted of four sections:

  • education;
  • science and innovation;
  • youth entrepreneurship;
  • tourism, culture and art.

PSU delegates presented the following reports:

1. “The Introduction of Chinese Students to Perm Territory: Tourist Attractions and Routes” by Anna Sterlyagova, undergraduate student, Faculty of Geography, PSU (academic adviser: Svetlana Myshlyavtseva, Associate Professor, Department of Tourism);

2. “Perm Society of Friendship with China: History, Formation, Modern Development” by Mikhail Kamenskikh, Associate Professor, the Department of Culture Studies and Social-Humanitarian Technologies, PSU;

3. “Russia and China: Creating a Common Educational Space” by He Tingting, postgraduate student, Faculty of Philology, PSU.

“I was quite excited to participate in the Forum. We discussed new educational technologies as a tool of international cooperation, the mission of young teachers in education and international exchange, the cooperation of Nanchang University with Russian partners, and the importance of student mobility programs. It was interesting to ask questions to speakers both from China and Russia,”

The Forum has been attended by representatives of Universities located in the Volga Federal District, Russia, and the provinces of the upper and middle Yangtze River: Anhui, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, as well as the city of central subordination Chongqing. The event is part of the program of the Year of Russian-Chinese Scientific, Technical and Innovative Cooperation.

In June 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the Joint Statement between the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation on the Development of Comprehensive Partnership and Strategic Interaction Relations Entering a New Era. According to the Statement, 2020 and 2021 were declared the Years of Russian-Chinese scientific, technical and innovative cooperation.

During the Years of Cooperation, over 1000 joint events are taking place both in Russia and China, including scientific projects, conferences and exhibitions, as well as intensive exchange between scientific institutions, universities and innovation centers.

Delegations of Perm-based universities have been taking part in the Forum for several years already, promoting academic exchange and opportunities for international students. In 2017, PSU delegates attended lectures at Hefei universities, took tours to local enterprises, visited classes on Chinese history, culture and arts, and planted a tree in the Friendship Alley of Anhui University.

International Students in Perm and PSU: News on Vaccination, Tests and Study Format

According to RBK-Perm Media Company (РБК-Пермь), the return of all foreign students to Perm might take 3-4 months. To remind, this is the information about the city on a whole, with several universities teaching various groups of international students, from all over the world.

One of the most important issues related to the return is the vaccination against coronavirus. Many students, according to the rules of their country, already come vaccinated. And, in order to switch them to full-time studies, universities require notarized and translated copies of vaccination certificates. However, not everyone has analogs of QR codes attributed to Russian vaccines.

As we earlier noticed, prior to arrival, foreign students must notify PSU International Department at least 10 days in advance of the entry date by int_dpt@psu.ru and international@psu.ru. No earlier than 3 days before the arrival, a foreign student must pass a PCR test for COVID-19.

Since September 2021, PSU international students are able to get vaccination at the University health center (dormitory #2). To do this, a student needs to show a voluntary health insurance, a personal ID and a student pass. Also, foreign citizens can be vaccinated in their own country.

Generally, foreign students in Perm are offered anti-COVID vaccination at Perm Regional Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS and Infectious Diseases (AIDS Center), on a commercial basis, RUB 650 per an injection. Those who do not get vaccinated, will also be allowed to study, in a remote format.

“The distance learning offered during the pandemic has already proved its efficiency. Offline classes ere are also present for those specialties which require lab projects and workshops. The process yet has been moved to the maximum distance,”

says Vadim Gataulin, Head of PSU International Department.

The overwhelming majority of foreign students in Perm – more than 90%, study on a paid contract basis. The tuition fees among all Perm-based universities remain the same – as well as the curriculum, which covers all the disciplines required, albeit in a distance format. Besides Perm State University, in Perm foreign students choose Perm National Research Polytechnic University, Perm State Medical University, Perm State Agrarian and Technological University.

Russian Language for Foreigners? Give It a Try!

International undergraduates studying in Perm will take part in the IV City Inter-University Olympics Test in Russian as a Foreign Language, to be held on 30 November (10am, local time), in an online format.

Students of preparatory departments and 1st year undergraduates are welcome to participate. Certificates will be given to all the contestants. The winners will receive special prizes.

To participate in the Test, you must record a presentation video, and fill out the form. The video should contain answers to the following questions:

  • What is your name?
  • How old are you?
  • Where did you come to Russia from? (city, country)
  • What is your future profession?
  • Why did you choose to study in Russia?
  • What are your hobbies or interests?
  • How do you spend your spare time?
  • What do you like about Perm?

The answers may be video-recorded via phone, photo- or video-camera, and must contain clear image and sound.

PSU Contributes to International Center on Eurasian Integration

Perm State University participates in Eurasian integration by creating a specialized research center, together with partners from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia and Russia. On the way, participants from more countries and institutions will join the project.

Vyacheslav Tereshenko, International Department, PSU, has presented a project “International Center for Science Competence as a Driver of Eurasian Integration”, in partnership with colleagues from Tyumen, Kuban, Tomsk and Kazakhstan universities.

The project is aimed at formation of international expert groups in priority areas of research on Eurasian topics, the creation of laboratories and scientific schools. The Center will develop and implement educational programs for master’s and postgraduate studies in a network format.

“For the Center to start going, it is necessary to create a consortium of universities, which will serve a launch pad for educational programs, internships and research on integration in the Eurasian space. We consider the universities of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia and Russia to be our first choice, since these states are actively creating a legal framework to commercialize the results of scientific, research and technical activities. The mentioned activities allow to develop new mechanisms for interaction between science and business – to ensure the introduction of high-techs into production, and stimulate businesses to participate in scientific projects,”

The notion of Eurasian countries in the project means the opportunity for a wider variety of national entities to step in the Center’s activity. The Eurasian continent spans from the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula in the west to the Japanese archipelago in the east, geographically. The division between Europe and Asia is a historical social construct, yet regarded as a whole in terms of water mass.

The presentation took place at the IPR MEDIA platform, the company being one of the leading developers of digital education resources in Russia. IPR MEDIA is known for its innovative products aimed at professional exchange, building communities and passing knowledge through end-to-end digital technologies.

PSU Chemists Invent New Materials, Get International Patents

By the end of autumn 2021, PSU scholars will patent 6 inventions in pharmacy and industrial chemistry, internationally.

Researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry, Perm State University have developed substances with antimicrobial activity and ways of their production – patenting new bioactive substances, pharmaceutical compositions and dosage forms.

“The Faculty of Chemistry, empowered by qualified experts in organic chemistry and pharmacology, as well as modern research equipment, allow us to conduct in-depth pharmacological studies of potential medical drugs,”

comments Dr. Irina Mashevskaya, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry.

Another group of researchers has developed a way to use a new corrosion inhibitor – a chemical compound that significantly reduces the rate of corrosion. PSU chemists are planning to develop technologies for the production, storage and use of hydrogen and carbon dioxide utilization issues.

“To convert our research into products, offering it for public use and private enterprises, attracting  industrial partners, participating in Research and Technological Development competitions, it is necessary for our results to be protected by patents, nationally and internationally,”

says Dr. Irina Mashevskaya.

Part of the research is carried out within the framework of the “Rational Subsoil Use” Perm Scientific and Educational Center. In charge of the patent registration is the Metrology and Patenting Office, being a part of the Department of Scientific and Innovative activities, PSU. PSU organics, physicists, pharmacologists and pharmaceutical technologists have always been leaders in patent and licensing activity at Perm State University. In total, researchers of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU have filed 48 patent applications in 2021.
