Foreign Musician to Join a Theatre Play by PSU Alumnus

On the very first days of winter 2021, a German-based musician IVAN joins Nikolay Gostyukhin (Perm, Moscow, Russia; Berlin, Germany), graduate of the Faculty of Philology, PSU, for his production of “Illusions” – a theater play and its televised version by Ivan Vyrypaev a popular contemporary Russian writer.

The play by Vyrypaev is a story about the illusory nature of love. It consists of monologues by four people, telling a touching life story of two married couples who have been friends with each other for many years. The play characters step into a frank conversation and sincere contact – the act many of us, spectators, have been deprived of during the COVID-19 epidemic and the following lockdown.

Ivan Vyrypaev is a popular Russian playwright, screenwriter, film director, actor and art director. He is a regarded as a leading figure in the Russian New Drama movement.

The music for both projects was composed by IVAN (Ivan Axenov), a young Berlin musician of Russian origin. The play and the film share common musical pieces. For a recent play, IVAN wrote several more musical themes.

“I’m a musician and a pathologist,” IVAN states. “How is this related? No way. Music has been with me since childhood, and I learned the specialty of a doctor later. Every day when I look through a microscope, I sort of look down on groups of people. And it gives me a lot of knowledge about the structure of society and our collective unconscious. It sounds very clever, but it’s actually quite simple. I look at the world with my eyes, and I reflect it in the form of sounds.”

According to Nikolay Gostyukhin, the director, the play is a story about the illusory nature of love: “at the end of days, you may find that for the whole of your love you have actually loved someone else.”

For the recent performance, Nikolai Gostyukhin, will be assisted by Alexei Khoroshev, the lighting designer, Perm Opera and Ballet Theater, and Nikita Goinov, designer and teacher, the Tochka Design School. Nikolay Gostyukhin made his debut as a play director for the performances of the “Iranian Conference” (2019) and “Excitement” (2020), which were also based on plays by Ivan Vyrypaev.

PSU Student Becomes European Champion in Taekwondo

Arina Biktimirova, a second-year student in Radio-Physics, the Faculty of Physics, PSU, has won a gold medal at ITF Taekwon-Do European Championships.

In total, the team from Perm and Perm Territory brought home 17 medals. As part of the Russian national team, athletes from Perm won 11 individual medals. The Championship took place from 23 to 30 October 2021 at the Heraklion lndoor Sports Arena, Dyo Aorakia, (Crete, Greece).

The European Taekwon-Do ITF Championships for Children, Juniors, Adults and Veterans have been hosted at Heraklion (Ηράκλειο), the capital city of Crete. According to the Championships organizing committee, after one and a half years of quarantine the athletes showed real passion to compete in this Championship, drawing enthusiasm among sport fans and media attention. 

Taekwon-Do (태권도/跆拳道), translated as “kicking,” “punching,” and “the art or way of” is a Korean form of martial arts, born in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II and Japanese Occupation. With backgrounds in Japanese and Chinese martial arts, the physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament.

Before entering the University, schoolchildren and college students would have been usually involved into sports. Perm State University does its best to follow their passion. The University Sports Club runs annual Championships in various sports, uniting more than 4,000 students in various activities, promoting their interests and contributing to their sports career, including martial arts.

PSU Student Joins European Youth Press

Elina Gabdurazakova, a 4th year student at the Faculty of Philology, PSU, has become an exclusive representative of the Russian Federation at the General Assembly of the European Youth Press (EYP).

EYP is actively involved in discussions on standards of education in journalism and media policy, in the European Union and beyond. Elina’s name had been proposed by the Yunpress media agency and federal public organization, Russia.

“Representing Russia means people’s trust in me, I am very glad I was able to get 10 out of 13 votes, and become an EYP member. For the next two years, I will represent there the interests of Russian youth journalism. Having joined efforts with European colleagues, this is also a chance to reach for new horizons in professional activity,”

says Elina.

Annually, EYP members meet to discuss urgent issues and make important decisions. There, Elina had presented her speech in English, introducing herself and her professional intentions. The successful performance allowed her to join the EYP executive committee.

In December 2021, the first meeting of the new EYP members will take place in Antwerp, Belgium, where the roles and responsibilities of each national representative will be determined.

Falling Walls Lab 2021: Share Insights, Discover Your Prospects

The Falling Walls Lab, a known international blitz conference in popular science takes place on 9 November – to commemorate the fall of the Berlin wall, which stopped dividing people and creative minds in Europe and beyond, for several decades. Breaking the walls metaphorically reflects liberation of ideas. It is indeed a great chance to show the innovative side of your research and find support.

The organizers unite young international researchers in natural sciences and humanities, including art, and help them find attention among global investors, business gurus and newsmakers. 

Each participant is given 3 minutes to present her/his research, business idea or project, using the English language. 3 finalists will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to give their talk on the Falling Walls grand stage. 15 participants will get an opportunity to take part in the business trainings – meeting outstanding experts and coaches, choosing the best business model for their project.

This year, the Conference comprises two events run in hybrid format:   

1-10 November: Berlin Science Week, holding more than 200 events where you can get inspired by innovative research, discuss current issues and exchange experiences. The program features activities on a wide variety of topics, from health and wellness to technical and scientific innovation. Participants are able to choose their favorite topic and join events online.

7-9 November, as the Falling Walls Science Summit ‘2021 finalists present their research and technological decisions, policymakers, researchers and business leaders step in to discuss the global challenges of our time.

To remind, Perm State University has been both setting and participating the Falling Walls Perm Lab twice, already. Last year, on behalf Perm krai, 28 applications were registered, and 11 participants chosen. In 2020, Ekaterina Stepanova, Associate Professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, PSU won the 1st prize with her report “Breaking the Wall of Antimicrobal Resisitance”. Among Top-100 world finalists, Ekaterina enjoyed the opportunity to present her report at the online Grand Finale in Berlin (Germany) – in front of a distinguished Jury. In 2018, another winner from PSU was Irina Barkina, MSci student of the Faculty of Biology, visited Berlin in person.

The concept of the Falling Walls is worth sharing and developing because we all want to live in this world peacefully and happily,”

Scholarship Opportunity at PSU

Planning to study at PSU, choosing faculties? Looking for scholarship opportunities?

Perm State University (PSU) has announced a start for a mini-grant scholarship in History and Politics. Eligible for the scholarship are 3rd and 4th year undergraduate students, MA and post-graduate students of the Faculty of History and Politics, PSU with distinguished academic performance. 

The mini-grant scholarship of RUB 30,000 ($ 400) comes as a one-off payment and is meant to provide additional support for research, collecting empirical data or public projects.

Initiated in 2018 by PSU alumni, the scholarship commemorates late Dr. Oleg Podvintsev, a known public figure, researcher and teaching professor Faculty of History and Political Sciences, PSU (Историко-политологический факультет ПГНИУ) and aims to promote bright students in the mentioned subjects.

Far From Politics? Closer Than You Think!

How often do you choose to vote, and why? Have you ever thought which factors shape your voice? Or, you are not interested in politics, at all? Political machines use various tools to reach their results, so it is reasonable to understand their impact. Researchers from Perm State University offer a fresher look on the election instruments in their new article:

Eleanora Minaeva and Pyotr Panov, PSU scholars from the Centre for Comparative History and Politics (CCHP), PSU, have published their article “Dense Networks, Ethnic Minorities, and Electoral Mobilization in Contemporary Russia” in the Problems of Post-Communism Journal, published by Routledge. The article by PSU scholars regards the phenomenon of dense networks, aimed to mobilize the electorate.

According to the researchers, the sustainability of the Russian electoral regime is based largely on non-programmatic electoral mobilization, ensuring a high level of electoral turnout and voting for the incumbent party. In spite of the state’s efforts to build an integrated comprehensive political machine, its segments, specifically in subnational units, demonstrate different results in electoral mobilization.

PSU scholars have studied characteristics of local communities that facilitate their emergence: countryside, settlement’s small size, and “segregated” type of ethnic groups’ localization – and their effect upon each other. Based on Duma elections’2016, an original set incorporating local-level data and GIS techniques has beenformed, showing the importance of dense networks in electoral mobilization.  

The regression models by the article authors have demonstrated that all predictors – the share of minorities in the population, countryside, small size of settlements, and segregated spatial localization of ethnic minorities in relation to each other and Russians – influence both turnout and voting for UR positively. Much more importantly, in combination, their effects are enhanced.

Political machines use the density of social networks in numerous ways and means. They rely on heads of administration as a part of ‘power vertical’, lower level ‘bosses’, NGO leaders, clergymen, and informal leaders like elders, celebrities or sportsmen, etc. The range of strategies and instruments of electoral mobilization force ordinary people to vote in what they believe is better for their community.

Learn and Publish with Faculty of Economics, PSU

Does PSU run workshops and programs in English? What extra opportunities does the University provide for its scholars and students? And, why publications matter for your future progress?  

On 21 October, a workshop uniting Australia, Republic of Ireland and Russia took place at the Faculty of Economics, Perm State University.

The workshop allowed its participants to meet with the editorial teams of the Journal of Management Education (JME, SCOPUS) and Management Teaching Review (MTR) – learning about journal sections and the publishing process, getting feedback on specific article ideas.

Moderators and speakers included, Ms Ekaterina Chuchulina, Office Head at PSU Project Office for International Cooperation, Associate Professor at the Department of Business Studies and Economic Security, PSU; Dr. Paul Donovan, MTR Editor, School of Business, Maynooth University, Ireland; Dr Marissa Edwards, Lecturer in Management, UQ School of Business, University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.

According to Ekaterina Chuchulina, the workshop improved participants’ skills in international academic publication activity. Having acquainted with the Scopus-based journal opens up new perspectives for the Faculty of Economics. As a result, the PSU teaching fellows received detailed instructions on publications, sections-based data, target research groups, as well as an invitation to join the editorial team as reviewers.

Why publications in English matter? Academic thesis usually requires articles in professional journals, which testify for one’s knowledge of subject and serve recognition of personal progress, worldwide. PSU Faculty of Economics runs several international business programs designed for foreign and Russian students – allowing to upgrade their knowledge in Economics and English language, growing competencies in international business, management, intercultural communication, and more. So, publishing an article might be a worthy step in following your professional and study career!

PSU Department of Management Gets a European Union Acclaim

The Department of Management, Faculty of Economics, Perm State University (PSU) has been awarded the European Commission’s quality mark for achievement in integration studies – the Jean Monet Plaque.

The letter and the plaque were delivered to PSU from Brussels on 6 October. The Jean Monet Plaque has been obtained following the results of the first year of the Erasmus+ grant (Jean Monnet program) “Public-private partnership in the European Union: experience and future trends” implementation. The grant is designed for 3 years.

The letter states, that the purpose of the plaque is twofold. It serves primarily as a label signifying quality in European integration studies and represents the achievements of PSU-related MODULE in this field. At the same time, it also provides visibility for the Jean Monnet Action, representing it as a focal point within and outside PSU and Faculty of Economics for the promotion of European issues.

“We regard international recognition as a really valuable feedback. The award became possible thanks to the teamwork of our Department of Management, lead by Dr. Igor Merzlov. As it is extremely important to be relevant in research and educational agenda, we see ourselves growing in this direction – applying for new grants, creating interethnic cooperation and educational programs, ”

emphasized Mikhail Gorodilov, Dean of the Faculty of Economics.

Over the previous academic year, the Department of Management implemented a series of thematic events and activities, to mention a monograph’s publication; a large-scale international conference “Days of Days of Public-Private Partnership in the Perm Territory” and the following publications; and a training course for Masters’ students. The Faculty experts held the first summer school for state and municipal officials in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development of the Perm krai. In their letter, the EU partners note the high level of research and level of events organized, expressing hope for further fruitful cooperation.

PSU and University of Helsinki Will Cooperate in Student Mobility 

The Center for Comparative History and Political Studies at Perm State University became a member of the project “Finnish-Russian Network on Area Studies and Methodologies”, funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education.

The project is aimed at developing cooperation in education – creating joint training courses and support for student mobility. Other participants in the project are University of Helsinki, Higher School of Economics, the European University at Saint Petersburg, as well as National Research Tomsk State University. The project will last till the end of 2023.

The Center for Comparative History and Political Studies (CCHPS) at Perm State University (PSU) is a team of researchers from different regions and countries, employed by the Faculty of History and Politics (Историко-политологический факультет – ИПФ ПГНИУ).

Established in 2012 by a group of PSU and the European University at Saint Petersburg graduates, the Center for Comparative History and Political Studies focuses on interdisciplinary and comparative studies in the field of social sciences, history, and anthropology, open to cooperation with the academic community across the globe. The Center programs enable dialogue between young scholars, creating a competitive academic environment, promoting the “circulation of minds”.

PSU and University of Lousville Unite for Translators Contest

433 translations have been checked by PSU students and teachers, who performed as jury experts in the Perm City Translators’ Contest – a record amount for the whole venue history. The event was held within the framework of “Perm-Louisville: Twin Cities ’Cultural Heritage” projects, addressing schoolchildren and college students.

Two groups of experts worked on their jury tasks, comprising students of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, teachers from four Perm universities, officials of Perm city administration, and the University of Louisville, a long-time partner of Perm State University.

The jury of the first selection round included 20 undergraduate students in Linguistics, as well as 20 graduate and postgraduate students. 23 faculty members and 7 students from the University of Louisville joined them for the second round, to specially name long-time partners Professor Michael Losavio and Thomas Dumstorf, teacher of Russian language and literature.

For the second round, two pieces from a thriller “A is for Aliby” by Sue Grafton were offered for an English-Russian translation, and an excerpt from “The Territory of God” by Yuri Aslanyan, Perm-based author, PSU graduate in Philology – for a Russian-English translation.

“This time, the project attracted 467 participants from our city, which undoubtedly testifies to the growing interest in such events among the youth of Perm, and beyond! Thanks to the city-rooted,  citizen-voiced competitions and projects, PSU students and teachers join the international movement of twinning and peoples’ diplomacy,”

“I would like to thank the organizers of the Contest for an excellent opportunity to practice our translation skills – which mean less without practice. I am happy to support such initiatives, growing as a professional translator, and stretching out for new literary horizons!”

Gorky Library; and Perm-Louisville Twin Cities Association.
