The Department of Dynamic Geology and Hydrogeology, Faculty of Geology (PSU) has hosted for the International Conference “Fundamental and Applied Research of Permian Field of Earth” within the framework of the “Science and Global Challenges of the 21st Century” International Forum. The Conference took place online, all reports were presented in English language.
Dr. Boris Osovetsky, Professor of the Department of Mineralogy and Petrography, Head of the Laboratory of Mineralogical and Petrographic Research at PSU Institute of Natural Sciences analyzed mineral associations in Pre-Kama sandstones.
Ivan Khopta, Senior Lecturer, Department of Regional and Petroleum Geology, PSU, and Pavel Popov, 4th year student of the Faculty of Geology, PSU, presented a study of organic matter deposits in the Jurassic.
Vitaly Goldyrev, PhD student and engineer of the Laboratory of Geology of Sedimentary and Technogenic Deposits, Department of Geology, PSU Institute of Natural Sciences, presented a report on the resource potential of a gold-copper-porphyry deposit in the Philippines.
The participants of the Conference particularly regarded efficient nature management and environmental solutions:
Dr. Alexander Nekrasov conducted a case-study of oil production at the Lekkerskoye oilfield of Timano-Pechorskaya Province (Russia). Innovative geographical techniques for long-term monitoring of oil-and-gas wells have been presented by a team of scientists lead by Dr. Vladimir Kostitsyn, PSU. Dr. Pavel Krasilnikov and research fellows Olga Meshcheryakova and Oksana Kletskina assessed the impact of industrial waste disposal facility and groundwater conditions within the Kirovo-Chepetskiy industrial hub (Russia).

The Festival program included a recognition of the brightest international students of Perm, the Cultural Fair, the Sport Together barrier line, the World Cuisines culinary battle, the Graffiti Walls art stage, and the final live performance, followed by a friendly tea party. The Festival guests relaxed in a Creativity Space – practicing art therapy, creating a multicolored patchwork of sketches and prints.
On the day of the Festival, a culinary battle took place: having received recipes and products, the participants were challenged to cook dishes of various cuisines of the world — from okroshka to bruschetta — as part of international teams. The winners became a united team of students from China, Turkmenistan and India from three Perm universities – presenting their variation of the Japanese sushi.
According to Diana Kipyatkova, the Festival organizer at PSU, ‘We Are’ appears the brightest and most unusual venue in Perm, second to none, a palletful of colors, national costumes and languages, a virtual trip around the world. Having uniting the universities of the city, the Festival gives an opportunity to see foreign students not only as representatives of cultures, but as personal talents:
“We hope all the participants felt the friendly atmosphere of the Festival, and passed its vibe further on. This is the place to meet real friends and join a wider student community – getting to know oneself, sharing national culture, growing individually and most importantly, enjoying the moment!”
Mohammed Al Lami (Iraq), student of the Faculty of Geography and a graduate of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU, shares his sparkle:
“This is the most amazing festival! Last time I was an organizer and presenter, it was a wonderful experience. A lot of people and positive emotions are what remained in the memory. This year I expect even more interesting activities, bright colors, people. I’m sure it will be fun!”
Jakkapob Dach-In (Thailand), a student of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, recollects:
“In 2018, I went on stage to talk about life in Russia as a foreigner. I remember there were a lot of international students from all over Perm. Some shared their experience of living here, some performed, singing or dancing. This year I am gladly broadening my vision of that.”
According to “We Are” organizers, the goal of the Festival is to help international students adapt to the Russian student community – involving them into student associations, creating positive atmosphere in hostels, initiating new international projects. For the Russian students, it is an opportunity to practice foreign languages with native speakers, with foreigners experiencing less language gaps.
On 24-25 October, 2022, an international online conference “Linguistic Technologies and Innovative Language Teaching” was held at Perm State University, as part of Perm International Forum “Science and Global Challenges of the 21st Century”.
Despite Covid restrictions in 2021 and growing number of objectives, the scholars managed to dive into the process of fruitful collaboration, internationally. The Department of English Language and Intercultural Communications at Perm State University (PSU) encouraged a broader dialogue – inviting colleagues from all over Russia, as well as long-time partners Prof. Dr. Michael Losavio and Prof. Dr. Adel Elmaghraby (University of Louisville, USA), and Prof. Dr. Reima Sado Al-Jarf (King Saud University, Saudi Arabia) to participate. Due to Professor Svetlana Polyakova, one of the key contributors to science diplomacy at PSU and in Perm, academic links grow into bigger projects and sister cities’ links. In 2022, the conference participants included students and teachers from Russia, China, Saudi Arabia and the USA.
The scholars’ reports considered corpus-oriented approach to analyzing texts of different genres, comparisons within English scientific and technical discourse; news bioethics terminology; ethical-legal-technical challenges with the Internet of things; impact of pandemic crisis on university management; metaphors in philosophical discourse; cognitive linguistic analysis in advertising; economical, linguistical, juridical and educational issues in naming companies; approaches regarding British fiction as a tool in tertiary level education.
“As a Conference co-organizer and contributor, I feel a certain tendency of scholars at finding something unexpected, yet catchy and prospective, long ahead standard expectations. Comparing reports of our foreign partners to those from Russian universities, I’d say the former tend to be more tech-oriented – regarding issues of digital technologies within the use of artificial intelligence, or machine learning in relation to a more humane world. Revealing the difference in academic paradigm in Russia, the Western countries and Eastern world, seems like a promising topic for a new research,”
says Konstantin Klochko, Head of the Department of English Language and Intercultural Communications, PSU.
The monograph by PSU scholars, titled “Sulphate Karst in Perm Region” will be published at one of the largest international publishing houses, Springer. The publication is included in the “Cave and Karst Systems of the World” book series, covering publications on karst-built natural sites of Brazil, Hungary, Madagascar, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, USA, Turkey, France, Croatia and South Africa.
The monograph “Sulphate Karst of the Perm Territory” was published in July, 2021, as a joint work of geologists and geographers of Perm State University (PSU). The publication have performed under support by the Government of the Perm Territory, as a part of a dedicated grant framework.
The research concentrates on sulfate karst, the character of its processing and distribution in the Perm region. The publication also contains an updated zone map of the territory, incorporating the use of GIS technologies, a detailed description of related areas describing the geological and hydrogeological conditions for the development of karst and karst phenomena.
Upon collaboration of the book authors and Springer editorial team, its new English language edition was announced for December, 2022. The publication is included in the Cave and Karst Systems of the World – to be the first among those publications on karst objects in Russia.
“Undoubtedly, the English version will allow a wide circle of international scholars to get acquainted with the results of our research. It will also increase the tourist attractiveness of the unique karst objects of the Perm Territory, such as the Kungur Ice and the Ordinskaya caves,” says Olga Meshcheryakova, Senior Researcher, Laboratory of Geology of Technogenic Processes, Natural Sciences Institute, PSU.
To remind, PSU scholars had already had a successful cooperation with Springer in 2019, as they published the “Dams and Reservoirs in Evaporites” monograph in collaboration with Professor Petar Milanovic, the University of Belgrade (Serbia).
PSU students have won the qualification in the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Championship in the Ural region (Russia). The Cat$ team from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU, took 1st place in the qualifying stage and headed to the quarterfinals.
Seven teams reached for the quarterfinals on behalf of PSU. At the Contest, a team of three people is given a computer and a set of complex algorithmic problems – to be solved in five hours. The Cat$ team successfully completed 10 out of 11 tasks, showing the highest result among all teams in the Ural region.
“Not only do competitions in programming help to develop personal and team skills, but also serve as a good start in career progress. Our teams regularly participate in the ICPC qualifying stages, and always show good results. Last year, we missed a tiny bit to reach the finals. This year, we’re going to use our chance,”

Attended by 25 teams from local universities and colleges, the qualifying round took place at Perm State University, with 16 PSU teams, on October, 8. Overall, 346 youth teams participated the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Championship in the Ural region.
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), is an annual multi-tiered competitive programming competition among the universities of the world. Headquartered at Baylor University (USA), the ICPC operates autonomous regional contests covering six continents culminating in a global World Finals every year.
The ICPC provides gifted students with opportunities to interact, demonstrate, and improve their teamwork, programming, and problem-solving prowess. It serves as a global platform for academia, industry, and community to assist the next generation of computing professionals.
Students and teaching staff of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, PSU, have celebrated International Translation Day.
For the Faculty, the 2021-2022 academic year had been fruitful in achievements and events. The Faculty students became winners in international translation competitions and language contests, research, international projects with Mexico and Spain, translation volunteering and inclusive training at the University of Grenoble-Alpes (France).
The Department of Linguistics and Translation is recently teaching about 400 undergraduate and graduate students in Linguistics, as well as in Translation and Translation Studies. At the holiday, the Faculty announced best students in studies, social activity and translation achievements. Partners from and PSU alumni studying in Spain, Mexico and France shared their video greetings. Video ‘cards’ and creative performances by PSU first-year students topped the holiday celebration.
The holiday also marked joint research projects by 4th year students in Linguistics and Translation, announcing the prize winner project – a multilingual website for PSU Situation Center, containing info on PSU values, student life, hostels, social and library services, psychological assistance and safety, as well as feedback, all using Russian, English, Chinese and Turkmen languages.
International Translation Day is an international day to recognize translation professionals. Celebrated on 30 September, introduced by the UN General Assembly resolution in 2017, the holiday is linked to St. Jerome, the Bible translator, considered historically as a patron of translators. The day expresses solidarity with the worldwide translation community and translation profession that has become increasingly essential in the era of globalization.
PSU Academic Council has awarded the title of Honored Professor of Perm State University to Dr. Boris Proskurnin, Head of the Department of World Literature and Culture, Doctor of Philology, Professor.
For more than 50 years, Dr. Boris Proskurnin has been contributing to PSU progress – starting as a student and a fellow assistant, and reaching the professor and Doctor of Sciences status, devoting most of his life to alma mater. His biography covers building the University literally, as part of a student construction team, as well as a running PSU Student Club (1973-1976). Combining research and teaching activity with the Head of the Department of Foreign Literature post, Dr. Boris Proskurnin also headed PSU International Department (1999-2003) and PSU Methodological Council (1998-2003).
Dr. Boris Proskurnin is among key researchers of Victorian literature in Russia, and an expert on Anthony Trollope (1815-1882). His name is associated with the first contacts with the University of Oxford, contributing to growing sister city relations of Perm and Oxford. For almost twenty years, Dr. Boris Proskurnin served as a Dean of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature. Thanks to his personal strive and the team he led, PSU gained new prospects fruited in solid national and internationally recognized projects.
Since 2002, the title of Distinguished Professor has been awarded to professors who have made a significant contribution to Perm State University progress. At the present moment, 27 names of prominent scholars are listed in the Book of Distinguished Professors, stored at the Museum of Perm State University History.

On 28 September, Perm State University (PSU) runs a meeting with Russian travelers Andrey and Marina Klochkov, famous for their southernmost family circumnavigation in history. The meeting will be held with the support by the Russian Geographical Society, Perm Branch.
In the spring of 2022, Andrei and Marina Klochkovs, accompanied by their daughters Anastasia and Lada, successfully finished their three-year voyage on board of yacht Lady Mary. The sailers crossed the equator four times and reached Antarctica.

The Faculty of Chemistry at PSU has initiated the 6th Prikamie (Perm Territory) Congress of Chemistry Teachers, titled “Continuing Chemistry Education as a Tool to Overcome Modern Challenges”. For four days, off- and online, chemistry school teachers and university staff from all over Russia and the Republic of Belarus are discussing the challenges and perspectives of modern chemical education.
The Congress unites several key partners, to name the Faculty of Chemistry at Moscow State University, the Association of Teachers of Chemistry, the “Chemistry at School” Magazine, the Petroleum+ Perm School #102, award-winning teachers and experts in chemistry. The Congress provides a broad overview of online resources for schools, colleges and higher educational institutions, as well as explores students’ progress in chemical science using competitive environment and dedicated study groups.
“For the Perm Territory, which has been long associated with “big chemistry”, the objective of training highly qualified personnel for the chemical industry is especially important. Teachers of chemistry play an important role in that process. For a number of years, the Congress has been bringing together experts and industry professionals, teachers and students of various levels – serving a platform for sharing established practices, discussing challenges and prospects in chemical education,”

Earlier in 2021, Counselor of Republic of Belarus, paid a visit to Perm State University (PSU). Mr. Vitaly Voytik, Adviser on Trade and Economic Issues, Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Yekaterinburg met Dr. Dmitry Krasilnikov, PSU Rector to discuss cooperation with scientific and industrial bodies of Belarus, stating education as one of the key priorities for such interaction in the future.
Besides education, possible cooperation in chemistry involves technical solutions in ecology and agriculture. About 40% of global potash salts are being produced in Belarus and Russia, and so does bring their industries closer. The Republic of Belarus lays special emphasis on cooperation with the Perm Territory, since the official signing of the cooperation agreement in 2016. Since that time, the trade turnover between Belarus and Perm territories raised up to $ 500,000,000.
“The Republic of Belarus is becoming an important partner of the Perm Territory. This opens up wide opportunities for both PSU and Belarusian enterprises. The University acts as a key member of the Perm Scientific and Educational Center “Rational Subsoil Use”, as well as the Photonics Competence Center, creating an extensive scientific and industrial base for international cooperation. As the IT sphere is extensively developed in Belarus and Perm, the interaction of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU with Belarusian colleagues offers new prospects in artificial intelligence research,”

The Department of Scientific and Innovation Activity at Perm State University reminds about the start of applications for a grant competition “Research activity of global-scale scientific laboratories, acquiring the policy of scientific and technological development priorities of the Russian Federation” (Applications Due to 3 October, 2022).
Supported by the President of Russian Federation, the grants by the Russian Science Foundation, will be allocated to acclaimed scholars, including young ones, to support their fundamental research and research practices in 2023-2026, followed by the possible extension of the supported project for 3 years. The scientific study (project) should be aimed at solving specific problems within one of the priorities of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation, as defined by the related strategy.
Invited for the competition are projects of scientific teams involved in global-scale scientific research, performed on the basis of existing laboratories (divisions) of Russian scientific organizations, Russian educational institutions of higher education or other organizations whose constituent documents provide the opportunity of carrying out scientific research on the territory of the Russian Federation by international (interstate or intergovernmental) scientific organizations, regardless of the position held by the head of the research team (hereinafter referred to as the project leader), his/her academic degree and citizenship, as well as organizational, legal and ownership status of the organization which shares the employment or civil law relations with the project leader or research team members.
The amount of the grant by the Russian Science Foundation is from RUB 20 million up to RUB 30 million in 2023; up to RUB 28 million in 2024; up to RUB 26 million in 2025; up to RUB 24 million in 2026.
To implement the project, legal entities interested in the results of the project may provide additional monetary funding.
