PSU Scholars Present at St. Petersburg International Gas Forum

On 13-16 September, Perm State University (PSU) is participating 11th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, presenting its research and practice activity in photonics and bioconversion, along with Perm Scientific and Educational Center “Rational Subsoil Use”.

Among the Forum participants are Professor Sergey Pyankov, Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, and Anatoly Pankov, Research Engineer at the “Photonics” NTI Competence Center at PSU.

At the Forum, the “Photonics” NTI Competence Center at PSU has presented four types of specially coated optical fibers, resistant to high temperatures (up to +400’C) and electromagnetic radiation, which makes their effective operation in wells and mines. Also exhibited, were two kinds of optical signal modulators developed by PSU “Photonics” Center (https://ntiphotonics.ru/), and used as a signal source for transmitting information via optical fibers from mines and wells to control panels.

The developments of PSU scientists in biotechnology and bioconversion of oily waste are used to restore ecosystems after industrial accidents and in mining areas, across several Russian regions. In that field, PSU joins its efforts with the Laboratory of Alkanotrophic Microorganisms at the Institute of Ecology and Genetics of Microorganisms, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which stocks the world’s largest collection of bacteria capable of oxidizing natural and anthropogenic hydrocarbons.

“The gas industry may rely on Russian science in the tasks of developing technological independence, as  our scientists’ latest developments tend to prove. Here at the Forum, we are promoting photonics technologies that can be applied in advanced well monitoring equipment. Another direction is biotechnologies, which help in the rehabilitation of ecosystems in the mining area or industry-related accidents,”

said Pavel Ilyushin, Head of of Perm Scientific and Educational Center “Rational Subsoil Use”.

Rational Subsoil Use and Photonics at PSU

The Perm Scientific and Educational Center “Rational Subsoil Use” had been created within the national project “Science” by the President of the Russian Federation, aiming  to create an ecosystem ensuring  technological breakthroughs in subsoil use, attracting young and  talented scholars.

Photonics is a dynamically developing area in science and technology, adjoining optics and electronics. Photonics uses photons rather than electrons to transmit data compared to electronics, introducing revolutionary change into entire industry. The solutions offered by photonics allow to increase the speed of information transfer and processing, reduce power consumption and provide a higher margin of competitiveness over electronic counterparts.

The annual income from the sale of devices and systems using photonics exceeds any expectations. While in 2019 the photonics market was valued at $686.86 billion, it is now expecting to reach $1080.3 billion by 2025.

PSU Opens Turkish Language Course, Plus to Chinese and Korean

The Regional Institute for Continuing Education at Perm State University (PSU) has launched a new course of Turkish language for the study year 2022-2023, concentrating on writing, oral speech and everyday communication.

As part of the course, the students will master the basics of Turkish grammar, learn to understand native speakers by ear, and initiate dialogue. Attention will be paid to the development of listening comprehension through the study of the culture, traditions and history of Turkey.

“In class, we will analyze TV-series and films, as well as music, contributing to our vocabulary. Through our telegram channel we hope our students to discover Turkish literature, as well as learn to understand speech patterns used in songs, poems and films,”

says Medina Akhverdova, Turkish language teacher.

PSU did have previous fruitful collaborations with Turkey. In 2017-2019, Uğur Yılmaz, a student from Erciyes University (Kayseri, Turkey) studied the concept of Eurasianism and its reflection among Russians, Americans, Western Europeans and Turks – as a part of his master’s course at the Faculty of History and Political Sciences, PSU.

“We are both different and the same. Unlike other Islamic countries, similar of Middle East, Turkey is a secular state, and somehow a part of Europe. Turkish youth is less ‘traditional’ today: for instance, we all enjoy international pop hits and wear fashion clothes. The feature typical of Turkish students is their mobility: we enjoy travelling a lot. And, Russia offers much in that respect, with your beautiful lands and long distances,”

admitted Uğur when asked about similarities of Turkish and Russian cultures.

Besides Turkish language, the “Littera” Language Center at PSU offers courses of Chinese and Korean. Chinese is one of the most complex languages in the world; Korean is considered to be most logically organized. Not only will course participants be able to master their basics, but also to get acquainted with the oriental culture and etiquette.

“In addition to the basics of grammar and vocabulary Korean, our students enjoy the opportunity of discovering Korean traditions and common life, the basics of communication and behavior, including social expectations and things to avoid,”

says Alena Meyler, teacher of Korean language, graduate of the Faculty of International Relations, Ural Federal University (Yekaterinburg, Russia).

To study Turkish, Chinese or Korean, invited are adults and children 12+. For more information, please turn to dedicated Littera link, or call: +7 (342) 237-63-35.

The Regional Institute for Continuing Education at PSU, established in 2004, remains one of the largest centers for additional education and professional orientation in the Perm territory – providing courses for all kinds of audiences, from college and university students to civil servants and practicing professionals. The institute is based at Perm State University campus and draws qualified teachers for its educational projects.

About the Faculty of History and Political Science

The Faculty of History and Political Science at PSU was born in 1960, initially as a joint with other University departments. In Soviet Russia, the Faculty was the first to switch to simultaneous study of both the world and national history. In 1996, the Faculty was transformed into the Faculty of History and Political Science, becoming the first one in the Russian history to prepare specialists in political science.

Among the first in the world, the Faculty opened a scientific and educational center for digital humanities, using IT tools to create virtual museums, preserving historical and cultural heritage. The Faculty has extended links abroad, primarily due the Center for Comparative Historical and Political Studies, founded in 2012.

Throughout years of research activity, several hundred archaeological sites of various cultures were found in Ural region, covering all stages of the development of the material culture of the ancient population from the Paleolithic to modern times.

Since 2008, the Faculty hosts annual scientific forums aimed at young researchers – the Russian Assembly of Young Political Scientists and the All-Russian Conference of Young Scientists, Graduate and Post-Graduate Students “Russia and the World in late XIX – early XX century.”
