Young Talents Announced by PSU Olympics in Languages

The Young Talents Olympics in Foreign Languages ‘2022 has taken place in Perm, Russia. More than 200 schoolchildren showed their knowledge in French, English and German. 120 students of 8-11 grades, coming from Perm territory, Moscow region and neighboring countries got the opportunity to take part.

The final stage of the Young Talents, held in a shape of a Translation Quest, consisted of several original texts of different genres – to be translated into Russian. Each language was linked to a specific field – the English part regarded traces of the national character, the French one – aromas, and the German one – cars. A particular task in English and French was linked to poetry, considered as fairly hard by many.

During the assessments, the jury checked the ability of contestants to interpret texts of different genres, correctly express ideas in Russian, create a text in the style required, deal with realities of foreign culture, as well as evolve the sense of language and a creative approach in translation.

The Young Talents Olympics was organized by the Department of Linguistics and Translation, Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, PSU.

PSU International Department reminds about a brilliant opportunity to get recognition from a published article, which can make young scholars improve their academic performance while studying in Russia:

Irkutsk National Research Technical University, a long-time partner of Perm State University, invites for the International Competition of Scientific Articles to be held on 10 December, 2021 (applications are due to 9 December).

The competition aims to generate and promote interest in research activities, improve the level of scientific culture and the quality of professional training. International students, undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates in sciences and arts are welcome to participate.

The competition is held in several modes:

  • oil and gas business;
  • mining;
  • architecture and construction;
  • economics and banking;
  • hi-tech;
  • aircraft and mechanical engineering;
  • linguistics.

Why Study Programming and Nano-Tech in Russia?

The doors to new friends, research collaborations, hi-tech and job opportunities: where to start with? Ever thought of studying neural networks, nanotechnology and programming? Why not try PSU?

According to https://www.payscale.com/ the average software developer salary in Russia is RUB 1,294,904 ($17,500) per year. In the global scale, the knowledge of programming plus competencies in nano-tech and neuroscience increases this figure several times, hence the demand for education in that field. Which is quite affordable here in central Russia, as well.

Recently, the students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU won prizes at the RuCode 4.0I international educational festival. Festival participants Vasily Chelpanov, Nikita Ponkin and Vladislav Smirnov won the artificial intelligence competitions.

The RuCode 4.0 IV All-Russian Educational Festival Finals in artificial intelligence and algorithmic programming were held on 20-21 November. In total, 5540 people from 82 regions of Russia and 39 countries took part. The Perm krai has entered Top 5 five active participants, taking the 4th place in terms of the number of Festival participants – 118 people.

PSU contestants took first and third places in the track by the School of Deep Learning at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and second in the track from Research Data Infrastructure, as well as prizes in the algorithmic programming championship.

“The championship allowed us to test our knowledge and skills in the field of machine learning. In one of the tasks, we had to experiment with architecture of neural networks, stepping in some kind of research. It was fun to see the solutions of the top participants on all tracks, and learn something new,”

says Nikita Ponkin, student of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Module, PSU.

The RuCode Festival is known as an international intensive training for young programmers who want to improve their knowledge and gain experience through competitions. The IT Network University and Perm State University assisted to the event in the Perm territory.

PSU Chess Team Sets New Records

PSU team has become a winner in the ChessUni WCLeague international chess tournament, at the start of November, 2021. In 100 minutes, PSU participants scored 217 team points, beating the MSU teams, MIPT, as well as universities from England, Scotland, USA and Canada.

On 13-14 November, Moscow hosted the full-time final of the ACC of Russia “Your Move” chess project. There, nine chess players from different faculties represented Perm State University.

Artem Polonsky, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics, PSU, a coach of the Univer Sports Club chess team, took 1st place in the All-Russian competition. This is Artem’s first victory in face-to-face competition, on a national scale. Vladimir Gein, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU has also entered the Top 4, being defeated by the champion and the vice-champion, only.

“This is a historic step for the PSU Sports Club. Recently, we have won several prizes and even topped in online tournaments, of various statuses. It has been extremely important to us to ‘convert’ our online success into a real competition, approving the overall progress. We regard it as a success of the whole chess sport at Perm State University, rather than an individual achievement,”

PSU Student Becomes European Champion in Taekwondo

Arina Biktimirova, a second-year student in Radio-Physics, the Faculty of Physics, PSU, has won a gold medal at ITF Taekwon-Do European Championships.

In total, the team from Perm and Perm Territory brought home 17 medals. As part of the Russian national team, athletes from Perm won 11 individual medals. The Championship took place from 23 to 30 October 2021 at the Heraklion lndoor Sports Arena, Dyo Aorakia, (Crete, Greece).

The European Taekwon-Do ITF Championships for Children, Juniors, Adults and Veterans have been hosted at Heraklion (Ηράκλειο), the capital city of Crete. According to the Championships organizing committee, after one and a half years of quarantine the athletes showed real passion to compete in this Championship, drawing enthusiasm among sport fans and media attention. 

Taekwon-Do (태권도/跆拳道), translated as “kicking,” “punching,” and “the art or way of” is a Korean form of martial arts, born in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II and Japanese Occupation. With backgrounds in Japanese and Chinese martial arts, the physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament.

Before entering the University, schoolchildren and college students would have been usually involved into sports. Perm State University does its best to follow their passion. The University Sports Club runs annual Championships in various sports, uniting more than 4,000 students in various activities, promoting their interests and contributing to their sports career, including martial arts.

PSU and University of Lousville Unite for Translators Contest

433 translations have been checked by PSU students and teachers, who performed as jury experts in the Perm City Translators’ Contest – a record amount for the whole venue history. The event was held within the framework of “Perm-Louisville: Twin Cities ’Cultural Heritage” projects, addressing schoolchildren and college students.

Two groups of experts worked on their jury tasks, comprising students of the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature, teachers from four Perm universities, officials of Perm city administration, and the University of Louisville, a long-time partner of Perm State University.

The jury of the first selection round included 20 undergraduate students in Linguistics, as well as 20 graduate and postgraduate students. 23 faculty members and 7 students from the University of Louisville joined them for the second round, to specially name long-time partners Professor Michael Losavio and Thomas Dumstorf, teacher of Russian language and literature.

For the second round, two pieces from a thriller “A is for Aliby” by Sue Grafton were offered for an English-Russian translation, and an excerpt from “The Territory of God” by Yuri Aslanyan, Perm-based author, PSU graduate in Philology – for a Russian-English translation.

“This time, the project attracted 467 participants from our city, which undoubtedly testifies to the growing interest in such events among the youth of Perm, and beyond! Thanks to the city-rooted,  citizen-voiced competitions and projects, PSU students and teachers join the international movement of twinning and peoples’ diplomacy,”

“I would like to thank the organizers of the Contest for an excellent opportunity to practice our translation skills – which mean less without practice. I am happy to support such initiatives, growing as a professional translator, and stretching out for new literary horizons!”

PSU Students Get into Top 50 World Programmers Teams

As a result of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) World Championship Finals, the students of Perm State University have entered Top 50 best teams in programming, taking 46th place out of 115 teams.

A team from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU named Bagels consisted of 3 students – Alexander Tsaplin, Dmitry Sidorenko, Dmitry Buzmakov, and Mikhail Lizunov, team coach.

At the competitions, participants were required to write a program code to solve complex algorithmic problems and teamwork skills within limited resources and time: a computer and a set of tasks that needed to be solved in 5 hours.

“We got positive emotions from the Contest, and achieved the goal we had set for ourselves. For two participants, this was the first time in the finals, so they feel more experienced now. The tasks were diverse and, most importantly, could find applications in real life – like generating a landscape, matching maps with marks on the globe, or improving robots’ movements,”

says Mikhail Lizunov, team’s coach.

As part of the World Championship final for participants and team coaches, the ICPC Challenge was held with the support of Huawei. Alexander Tsaplin, a member of the Bagels team, a graduate of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU was announced a winner of the challenge.

PSU Geographer Becomes Best Guide and Translator, Nationally

Azat Safaryan, Associate Professor, Department of Tourism, Perm State University (PSU) has been announced a winner of the All-Russian Professional Competition in Tourism, within a “Guide-Translator” sub-nomination. For the second year in a row, Perm-based professionals are being awarded this title.

Besides his research and teaching competences in Geography, Azat speaks fluent English. For more than five years, he has been showing progress as a guide-translator. He also contributed to the making of the Perm Map Brand App, a city database developed through real feedbacks from citizens.

The Perm Map Brand App allows users to learn about Perm landmarks, providing photos and locations, including museums, monuments, hotels, restaurants, dance clubs, learning and study sites, sport and yoga centers, gardens and parks, or just nice places for ‘picture opportunity’.

Perm is a multicultural community, and Azat bears roots in Armenian culture.

“Perhaps, my advantage is the fact I am not a native Permian. The mixed view on behalf both the local resident and a tourist gives me the opportunity to adapt the content individually for each visitor,”

says Azat Safaryan.

The All-Russian Professional Competition in Tourism is held annually by the Federal Agency for Tourism. 145 participants from 50 regions of the Russian Federation became its nominees on the federal level, in 2021.

PSU Translators Win Twin Cites Contest

PSU students have successfully performed at a regional international Translators ’Competition, contributing to Perm (Russia) and Louisville (USA) twin cities’ link.

15 undergraduate and graduate students from Perm State University are listed among 29 winners in various categories, representing the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature; the Faculty of Law; the Faculty of Economics; and the Faculty of History and Political Science, PSU. The Competition involved 135 students from 8 Perm-based higher institutions. In total, the Organizers’ Committee received 160 pieces, translated; a few participants challenged several translations at once.

Four pieces by contemporary American authors had been offered for the Competition: “A is for Aliby” by Sue Grafton, “Old Muscovy” by Massie Robert and “The Healing” by Gayl Johnes. All authors come from the sister city of Louisville (USA) and represent those writings previously untranslated into Russian. In return, two excerpts from the book “The Territory of God” by Yuri Aslanyan, Perm-based author had been offered for a Russian-English translation part.

The Translators ’Competition became a part of “Perm-Louisville Twin Cities ’Cultural Heritage” framework, within the 23rd Perm City Competition of Social Projects “The City is Us”. PSU to Support International Film Festival

On 6–16 September, Perm State University is hosting the “VUZ-Flahertiana” contest for student-based cinema clubs, as a support for the Flahertiana International Documentary Film Festival.

The VUZ-Flahertiana is a friendly way to talk about how we feel, in relation to non-fiction, true-to-life and hard-to-predict stories, which documentaries are. Our own response might be a valuable part of such a screening. According to the Contest Committee, “the goal of the competition is to promote the dialogue culture, tolerance, civic engagement and motivation in youth environment.”

Each University faculty was given the opportunity to choose its own film, referring to the unique collection by the Flahertiana International Film Festival, collected over the years of existence. Flahertiana’s competitive selection means we have access to the cream of the cream contestant productions within the documentary field.

“The University develops in a dialogue with the local community, and itself,” says Ksenia Punina, Head of the Public Relations Department, PSU. “Here this dialogue is being given technical and intellectual support, as well as the interdisciplinary and unifying approach, hence the choice of films.“

Instead of affiliation with a particular field of science, in 2021, the most popular topic is connected to personal progress and self-search, as well as the role that media in that phenomenon. It can be assumed that this choice was triggered by the threat to the human species in the face of the pandemic and the withdrawal of online education.

“We hope that each show will reveal the individuality character of the faculty, encouraging students and teachers to speak out, contributing to the interactive University climate. We are looking forward to make “VUZ-Flahertiana” a year-round film club in a partnership and mentorship of the Perm Cinema Center,”
