PSU Student from Columbia Wins Russian Language Contest

Fernando Castro (Columbia), 1st year student at the Faculty of Geology, PSU, took 3rd place at the Perm City Inter-University Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language.

In 2021, students from 9 countries and 6 Perm-based universities, entered the Olympiad. The contest tasks included a test, an written, and oral tasks. The winners of the Olympiad are:

1st place – Umaima Guidir, Morocco

2nd place – Wongai Chimamise, Zimbabwe

3rd place – Fernando Castro Eszibel Eloy, Colombia

To apply for the Olympics, contestants had to introduce themselves, talking about their age, studies and and hobbies, country of origin, future profession and future plans, as well as feedback about Perm.

The founders and organizers of the Olympiad were Perm Agrarian and Technological University; Perm City Youth Parliament; Perm Ethno-Centre Non-Profit Partnership; and Perm City Youth Palace. For the second year, the Olympiad takes place in online format. The has been supported by grant from Perm City Competition of Youth Initiatives Improving Inter-Ethnic Harmony.

Supporting the initiative, the grant competitors offer projects aimed at inter-university interaction of foreign students, improving inter-ethnic relations and international communication in Perm. Some projects regard social and cultural adaptation of foreign students, other aim to develop their creativity and individual progress, preventing inter-ethnic conflicts.

PSU Improves Sustainable University Status in UI GreenMetric 2021

On 14 December 2021, the UI GreenMetric has announced the World University Rankings Results and Awards. The ceremony took place online in Jakarta, Indonesia. According to the Ranking, Perm State University (PSU) has moved up from 446 to 428 place, globally.


For two years already, PSU has been ranked 16th among the total of 54 Russian universities, having participated in the ranking for two years in a row. On the European scale, PSU takes 132 place. According to UI in GreenMetric’2021 Global Ranking, PSU shows the following results:

Education & Research- 1150
Waste – 1125
Energy & Climate Change – 1025
Setting & Infrastructure – 825
Water – 550

In 2021, the UI GreenMetric World Ranking was attended by 956 universities from 80 countries around the world. Informally, according to a feedback by UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 154 world universities fall into the Gold Cluster category, 435 universities are in the Silver Cluster category, and 367 universities are in the Bronze Cluster category: https://www.uinjkt.ac.id/ui-greenmetric-2021-uin-jakarta-achieve-the-2021-most-sustainably-improved-university-status

At the global level, the five highest rankings were respectively achieved by Wageningen University & Research (Netherland), University of Nottingham (UK), University of Groningen (Netherlands), Nottingham Trent University (UK), University of California, Davis (USA).

According to UI GreenMetric vision, regardless of the existing rankings, a need for a uniform system addressing the problems of sustainability and environmental impact allowed them to launch a new ranking, marking universities’ ability to reach Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), since 2010.

In their present greetings letter, the UI GreenMetric team has stated that the rankings participants “have successfully demonstrated improvement in their university strategic measures to achieve SDGs in all aspects of their university activities… to create the most sustainable world campuses.”

PSU Students Win RUB 2.5 Million Grant

Seven students from Perm State University have been announced laureates of “Your Move” All-Russian Student Competition, winning RUB 2.5 million ($34,000) for the university projects.

In the competition finals, the participants developed projects with teams of previously selected spheres. Among the prize-winners are PSU international students and, particularly, Meylis Tuvakov (Turkmenistan), Faculty of Economics, who initiated the Center of Foreign Culture at Perm State University.

Alisa Okulova, a 4th year student at the Faculty of Philology, and her team have developed a “Restart” Project solution – helping graduate students cope with burnout:

“My team and I worked on a mega-challenge of Stress-Free Space at universities. Our “Restart” project involves the creation of a platform – providing access to useful info, videos and dialogue with a chatbot, and also advice from university psychologists and students who have coped with emotional burnout,”

shares Alisa Okulova.

Meylis Tuvakov, known as a curator of PSU Center of Foreign Culture, unites a team of task-oriented, fast and able volunteers, aimed at collaborations on and off-campus, including sports and creative projects.

“To improve yourself and show progress, one has step into a team. Together, we try to implement cool ideas into projects of all kind. Not does it only help us to promote ourselves or faculties we belong to, but also develop successful communication, team work, brainstorming, leadership and more – turning them to action,”

Meylis states.

The Grant will be given to several PSU projects and will be regarded as an investment into student activity, on the whole.

Why Study Programming and Nano-Tech in Russia?

The doors to new friends, research collaborations, hi-tech and job opportunities: where to start with? Ever thought of studying neural networks, nanotechnology and programming? Why not try PSU?

According to https://www.payscale.com/ the average software developer salary in Russia is RUB 1,294,904 ($17,500) per year. In the global scale, the knowledge of programming plus competencies in nano-tech and neuroscience increases this figure several times, hence the demand for education in that field. Which is quite affordable here in central Russia, as well.

Recently, the students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU won prizes at the RuCode 4.0I international educational festival. Festival participants Vasily Chelpanov, Nikita Ponkin and Vladislav Smirnov won the artificial intelligence competitions.

The RuCode 4.0 IV All-Russian Educational Festival Finals in artificial intelligence and algorithmic programming were held on 20-21 November. In total, 5540 people from 82 regions of Russia and 39 countries took part. The Perm krai has entered Top 5 five active participants, taking the 4th place in terms of the number of Festival participants – 118 people.

PSU contestants took first and third places in the track by the School of Deep Learning at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and second in the track from Research Data Infrastructure, as well as prizes in the algorithmic programming championship.

“The championship allowed us to test our knowledge and skills in the field of machine learning. In one of the tasks, we had to experiment with architecture of neural networks, stepping in some kind of research. It was fun to see the solutions of the top participants on all tracks, and learn something new,”

says Nikita Ponkin, student of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Module, PSU.

The RuCode Festival is known as an international intensive training for young programmers who want to improve their knowledge and gain experience through competitions. The IT Network University and Perm State University assisted to the event in the Perm territory.

PSU International Students Lead in Russian Language Contest

A team of students from Turkmenistan, studying at the Faculty of Philology, PSU, has become a winner of a national competition in Russian language competency. The contest brought together international students from several Russian universities coming from the Republic of Botswana, Cameroon, China, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Morocco, Syria, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The competition marked the 220th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Dahl (1801-1872), the famous lexicographer, a friend of Alexander Pushkin, a writer and passionate ‘collector’ of the Russian language and its dialects. The event, which started on 22 November, also echoed the national Day of Dictionaries and Encyclopedias.

The venue took place at the Astrakhan State University, with a support by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The project aims to improve literacy among non-Russian speakers, expanding the boundaries of the Russian language and cultural space.

International students from four Russian higher educational institutions – Perm State University (PSU), Astrakhan State University, Astrakhan State Technical University and Astrakhan State Medical University met the challenge and took part in the competition.

In teams, contestants developed projects related to Dal’s professional activity, connected to his famous Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language. The students showed creativity at making colorful presentations, selecting poems and videos, comparing proverbs and sayings in different languages. PSU Turkmenistan team offered an online quiz, based on Dal’s patterns.

PSU School of Philology, founded in 1916, has been popular over years until today. Apart from studying literature and learning languages, modern students in philology learn Internet technologies, web design, media relations, content management and create their own projects.

Among the Faculty partners are universities from Austria, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Serbia, UK and Yugoslavia and Baltic states – running educational and research projects in Russia and overseas.

PSU Scholar Wins $1000 Award at Conference in Iran

Polina Sairanova, a post-graduate student of the Faculty of Biology, and an engineer of the Hydro-Chemical Analysis Lab at the Faculty of Geology, PSU, has entered Top 10 winners of Youth Outstanding Paper Award (YOPA) by World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC).

The YOPA WASWAC Prize aims to encourage young scientists to research the problems of soil and water conservation in the world. The award consists of a WASWAC certification and a $ 1,000 royalty. WASWAC YOPA 2021 is provided by Beijing Datum Technology Development Company, China.

This year, the award was presented at the Third International Youth Forum on Soil and Water (IYFSWC), which took place in October 2021 at Tarbiat Modares University, Iran.

The Forum’s main theme became Soil and Water Conservation under Changing Environments. Participants from Iran, China, Russia and Italy reached the finals. Polina Sairanova became the participant to represent Russia, exclusively – presenting a report “Acid footprint in brown soils of the Middle Urals”.

Polina built her research on interpretation of the data acquired in the Basegi Reserve, Russia. Soil acidity indicators are known to be key parameters to define the direction and dynamics of soil processes – allowing to estimate the ecological state of natural objects.

10 top selected papers will be published in International Soil and Water Conservation Research (ISWCR) upon experts’ positive feedback and reviewers’ corrections.

The World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC) as the oldest worldwide academic society in the field of soil and water conservation. The aim of WASWAC is to promote the wise use of management practices that will improve and safeguard the quality of land and water resources so that they continue to meet the needs of agriculture, society and nature.

PSU Chess Team Sets New Records

PSU team has become a winner in the ChessUni WCLeague international chess tournament, at the start of November, 2021. In 100 minutes, PSU participants scored 217 team points, beating the MSU teams, MIPT, as well as universities from England, Scotland, USA and Canada.

On 13-14 November, Moscow hosted the full-time final of the ACC of Russia “Your Move” chess project. There, nine chess players from different faculties represented Perm State University.

Artem Polonsky, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics, PSU, a coach of the Univer Sports Club chess team, took 1st place in the All-Russian competition. This is Artem’s first victory in face-to-face competition, on a national scale. Vladimir Gein, a student of the Faculty of Chemistry, PSU has also entered the Top 4, being defeated by the champion and the vice-champion, only.

“This is a historic step for the PSU Sports Club. Recently, we have won several prizes and even topped in online tournaments, of various statuses. It has been extremely important to us to ‘convert’ our online success into a real competition, approving the overall progress. We regard it as a success of the whole chess sport at Perm State University, rather than an individual achievement,”

PSU Student Becomes European Champion in Taekwondo

Arina Biktimirova, a second-year student in Radio-Physics, the Faculty of Physics, PSU, has won a gold medal at ITF Taekwon-Do European Championships.

In total, the team from Perm and Perm Territory brought home 17 medals. As part of the Russian national team, athletes from Perm won 11 individual medals. The Championship took place from 23 to 30 October 2021 at the Heraklion lndoor Sports Arena, Dyo Aorakia, (Crete, Greece).

The European Taekwon-Do ITF Championships for Children, Juniors, Adults and Veterans have been hosted at Heraklion (Ηράκλειο), the capital city of Crete. According to the Championships organizing committee, after one and a half years of quarantine the athletes showed real passion to compete in this Championship, drawing enthusiasm among sport fans and media attention. 

Taekwon-Do (태권도/跆拳道), translated as “kicking,” “punching,” and “the art or way of” is a Korean form of martial arts, born in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II and Japanese Occupation. With backgrounds in Japanese and Chinese martial arts, the physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament.

Before entering the University, schoolchildren and college students would have been usually involved into sports. Perm State University does its best to follow their passion. The University Sports Club runs annual Championships in various sports, uniting more than 4,000 students in various activities, promoting their interests and contributing to their sports career, including martial arts.

PSU Department of Management Gets a European Union Acclaim

The Department of Management, Faculty of Economics, Perm State University (PSU) has been awarded the European Commission’s quality mark for achievement in integration studies – the Jean Monet Plaque.

The letter and the plaque were delivered to PSU from Brussels on 6 October. The Jean Monet Plaque has been obtained following the results of the first year of the Erasmus+ grant (Jean Monnet program) “Public-private partnership in the European Union: experience and future trends” implementation. The grant is designed for 3 years.

The letter states, that the purpose of the plaque is twofold. It serves primarily as a label signifying quality in European integration studies and represents the achievements of PSU-related MODULE in this field. At the same time, it also provides visibility for the Jean Monnet Action, representing it as a focal point within and outside PSU and Faculty of Economics for the promotion of European issues.

“We regard international recognition as a really valuable feedback. The award became possible thanks to the teamwork of our Department of Management, lead by Dr. Igor Merzlov. As it is extremely important to be relevant in research and educational agenda, we see ourselves growing in this direction – applying for new grants, creating interethnic cooperation and educational programs, ”

emphasized Mikhail Gorodilov, Dean of the Faculty of Economics.

Over the previous academic year, the Department of Management implemented a series of thematic events and activities, to mention a monograph’s publication; a large-scale international conference “Days of Days of Public-Private Partnership in the Perm Territory” and the following publications; and a training course for Masters’ students. The Faculty experts held the first summer school for state and municipal officials in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development of the Perm krai. In their letter, the EU partners note the high level of research and level of events organized, expressing hope for further fruitful cooperation.

Film by PSU Alumnus Nominated for Oscar

Lyubov Mulmenko, a graduate of the Faculty of Philology, Perm State University (PSU) is listed among the co-authors of the script for the film “Compartment No. 6 “, nominated for an Oscar prize (https://abc.com/shows/oscars), in a Category “Best Movie in a Foreign Language”, representing Finland.

“Compartment No. 6” (Finnish: “Hytti nro 6”) is a 2021 internationally co-produced drama, which shows a story of a Finnish student forming an unlikely friendship with a gruff Russian miner, on a train from Moscow to Murmansk. Based on a novel by Rosa Liksom, the film was co-written and directed by Juho Kuosmanen, and united a crew from Finland, Germany, Estonia and Russia. Lyubov Mulmenko was invited to work on dialogues in Russian, as a script had been originally written in English.

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are regarded as the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide, since 1929. Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

Earlier, “Compartment No. 6” got the Palme d’Or Grand Prix at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.  Founded in 1946 in Cannes, France, it is one of the “Big Three” major European film festivals, and an event for the whole global cinema industry.

In 2021, the Cannes Festival saw another film by Lyubov Mulmenko, also performing as a co-screen writer (lead by Kira Kovalenko and a co-director Anton Yarush) – “Unclenching the Fists”, a family drama growing in a mining town in North Ossetia – a story of a young woman struggles to escape the stifling hold of the family she loves as much as she rejects. “Unclenching Fists” won the Grand Prix of the Uncleaning View author’s film competition at the 74th Cannes Film Festival.

The American Variety  Weekly has included Lyubov Mulmenko in the list of 12 Rising Russian Talents Ready for the Global Stage.

From a young age, Lyubov Mulmenko knew she would be a writer: “I just adored inventing the characters and the worlds they live in”. Gradually, she tried “to learn even more in the process.” At Perm State University, Lyubov studied journalism, and further art journalism at the Pro Arte Institute in St. Petersburg. For several years then, she worked in media, including the Sol Internet Newspaper, the Companion Magazine, the New Companion Newspaper, and wrote as a columnist for the https://Lenta.ru.

In 2014, Mulmenko made her screenwriting debut with a trio of drama films that screened in festivals including Rotterdam, San Sebastian and Karlovy Vary. Recently, Lyubov Mulmenko presented her directorial debut, “The Danube”, in the main competition of the Kinotavr Film Festival. “All I hope is to continue with storytelling,” she says, “but I’d like to write less for others and make more films myself.”
