PSU Participates Russian-German Symposium

The International Academic Cooperation Office team spoke on behalf of Perm State University at the Russian-German Symposium “The Interaction of Climate Issues Coverage and Science Diplomacy.”

Young scholars, communicators in science and journalists from Germany and Russia used the Symposium platform to discuss the relevant issues, and practice academic communication skills in an interactive workshop. Addressing the topic, the team of Natalia Dobrynina, Kristina Vetrova and Anna Peisakhovich discussed the role of science diplomacy and science journalism.

On behalf of the German side, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences as a part of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres (GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam – Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum), and Humboldt University of Berlin (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin,) took part.

“The events like this are important for Russian universities, as they contribute to the progress of bilateral academic ties, effective academic communication and involvement in the search for joint solutions to global challenges,” says Natalya Dobrynina, Head of the International Academic Cooperation Office, PSU, in an interview with Dr. Ludwig Stroink, Head “Projects & International Affairs” – Executive Board, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.

Concentrating on the Symposium topic, the participants discussed the positive effect of climate research in international academic collaborations, contributing to the overall diplomatic climate. Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Russia (Botschafter der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in der Russischen Föderation) participated in the discussion. The participation in the Symposium followed the goal of developing the science diplomacy at PSU within the framework of the “Rational Subsoil Use” Perm Research and Educational Center

PSU International Students Receive Diplomas in Modern Pedagogics

Eight international students from Turkmenistan, Faculty of Biology, PSU, graduated from the professional retraining program in Modern Pedagogy, obtaining a qualification “Teacher of Basic and Secondary General Education”.

Overcoming language and cultural barriers, using modern technologies and new methods, the Faculty of Education at the Regional Institute for Continuing Education, PSU, did its best to help international students become an effective teacher.  

All the Course students had their final theses defended, receiving excellent marks and graduation certificates. The knowledge and skills acquired during the Course will enhance their professional performance in practice, at school.

The diplomas were presented by Mikhail Mukhin, Acting Head of the Institute, Valery Zhuk, Deputy Dean for Extracurricular Activities, and Tatyana Kuznetsova, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, Faculty of Biology, PSU. The Regional Institute for Continuing Education, established in 2004, remains one of the largest centers for additional education and professional orientation in the Perm territory – providing courses for all kinds of audiences, from college and university students to civil servants and practicing professionals.

PSU Academic Library invites international students to join the DigitalUni Russian Club for free online courses in Russian as a foreign language.  

The DigitalUni Russian Club is a project by IPR MEDIA with a grant from the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. Having joined the Club, you will:

  • participate in free conversation clubs run by teaching professors from Russian universities;
  • get access to free educational literature on Russian as a foreign language, for different levels;
  • use broad education material, including videos;
  • pass the test for knowledge of Russian as a foreign language (TORFL);
  • get a personal certificate;
  • will see presentations of Russian universities.

PSU Shares Research Experience in Serbia, Leads to Signing of Cooperation Memorandum

Olga Meshcheryakova, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Geology, Perm State University (PSU), has successfully completed a research internship “Environmental Technologies in Karst Areas” at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade, Serbia.

The participation of PSU has been performed within the framework of the “Rational Subsoil Use” Perm Research and Educational Center – leading to signing of memorandum between two universities.

The internship included lectures and workshops, ‘field’ classes and elements of scientific tourism – allowing to study innovative approaches at solving environmental problems in karst regions. The study methods were aimed at protecting karst landscapes, caves and aquifers from pollution.

As a program participant, Olga Meshcheryakova is known for being keen in various fields of expertise – being an associate professor at the Department of Dynamic Geology and Hydrogeology, and a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Geology of Technogenic Processes, Natural Science Institute, PSU.

The studies in Serbia covered such topics, as the use of underground space for economic purposes, the interaction and prospects within speleology and spelestology. The study discussion acquired to better classification of speleological and spelestological sites on the global scale.

The visits to the Center for Karst Hydrogeology and various research labs helped to broaden the internship program. “During the field practice, we took water samples, measured hydro-chemical and physical parameters of karst waters, and studied karst surfaces,” recollects Olga Meshcheryakova.

Biljana Abolmasov, Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Mining at the University of Belgrade and Olga Meshcheryakova negotiated the signing of the memorandum of cooperation between the faculties. The document implies educational programs for students, joint participation in international grant competitions, as well as running the International Karst Conference at Perm State University in 2024.

PSU Scholars Contribute to Film on Pasternak, Participate International Contest

15 years ago, PSU scholars Vladimir Abashev, Elena Vlasova, Ivan Pechishchev and Anastasia Firsova took part in the creation of the Pasternak’s House Museum in the village of Vsevolodo-Vilva – a local Ural place associated with a famous Russian poet and author of the “Doctor Zhivago” novel, who lived here in 1916.

Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) is known as a man of letters, and a Nobel-prize winner, which lead to his friction with the Soviet government, yet a great popularity around the world.  The Museum in Vsevolodo-Vilva is known for its natural folk scenery, typical of the Northern Urals, sung in Pasternak’s poetry.

In 2021, the film “Pasternak’s Oberland” was shot with a contribution by Perm State University philologists, allowing to experience the Museum’s vibe – the youngest and most remote branch of the Perm Museum of Local Lore, which attracts up to 3000 visitors annually by its creative and inclusive activity.

The film was sent to a prestigious competition of MUSEUMS IN SHORT 2021, an international contest in short videos realized by/for/with museums, in the category “Storytelling: Short Narratives in Video Format”. The audience is welcome to see the film and vote here.

PSU Students Win RUB 2.5 Million Grant

Seven students from Perm State University have been announced laureates of “Your Move” All-Russian Student Competition, winning RUB 2.5 million ($34,000) for the university projects.

In the competition finals, the participants developed projects with teams of previously selected spheres. Among the prize-winners are PSU international students and, particularly, Meylis Tuvakov (Turkmenistan), Faculty of Economics, who initiated the Center of Foreign Culture at Perm State University.

Alisa Okulova, a 4th year student at the Faculty of Philology, and her team have developed a “Restart” Project solution – helping graduate students cope with burnout:

“My team and I worked on a mega-challenge of Stress-Free Space at universities. Our “Restart” project involves the creation of a platform – providing access to useful info, videos and dialogue with a chatbot, and also advice from university psychologists and students who have coped with emotional burnout,”

shares Alisa Okulova.

Meylis Tuvakov, known as a curator of PSU Center of Foreign Culture, unites a team of task-oriented, fast and able volunteers, aimed at collaborations on and off-campus, including sports and creative projects.

“To improve yourself and show progress, one has step into a team. Together, we try to implement cool ideas into projects of all kind. Not does it only help us to promote ourselves or faculties we belong to, but also develop successful communication, team work, brainstorming, leadership and more – turning them to action,”

Meylis states.

The Grant will be given to several PSU projects and will be regarded as an investment into student activity, on the whole.

Why Study Programming and Nano-Tech in Russia?

The doors to new friends, research collaborations, hi-tech and job opportunities: where to start with? Ever thought of studying neural networks, nanotechnology and programming? Why not try PSU?

According to https://www.payscale.com/ the average software developer salary in Russia is RUB 1,294,904 ($17,500) per year. In the global scale, the knowledge of programming plus competencies in nano-tech and neuroscience increases this figure several times, hence the demand for education in that field. Which is quite affordable here in central Russia, as well.

Recently, the students of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, PSU won prizes at the RuCode 4.0I international educational festival. Festival participants Vasily Chelpanov, Nikita Ponkin and Vladislav Smirnov won the artificial intelligence competitions.

The RuCode 4.0 IV All-Russian Educational Festival Finals in artificial intelligence and algorithmic programming were held on 20-21 November. In total, 5540 people from 82 regions of Russia and 39 countries took part. The Perm krai has entered Top 5 five active participants, taking the 4th place in terms of the number of Festival participants – 118 people.

PSU contestants took first and third places in the track by the School of Deep Learning at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) and second in the track from Research Data Infrastructure, as well as prizes in the algorithmic programming championship.

“The championship allowed us to test our knowledge and skills in the field of machine learning. In one of the tasks, we had to experiment with architecture of neural networks, stepping in some kind of research. It was fun to see the solutions of the top participants on all tracks, and learn something new,”

says Nikita Ponkin, student of the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Module, PSU.

The RuCode Festival is known as an international intensive training for young programmers who want to improve their knowledge and gain experience through competitions. The IT Network University and Perm State University assisted to the event in the Perm territory.

PSU International Students Lead in Russian Language Contest

A team of students from Turkmenistan, studying at the Faculty of Philology, PSU, has become a winner of a national competition in Russian language competency. The contest brought together international students from several Russian universities coming from the Republic of Botswana, Cameroon, China, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Morocco, Syria, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The competition marked the 220th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Dahl (1801-1872), the famous lexicographer, a friend of Alexander Pushkin, a writer and passionate ‘collector’ of the Russian language and its dialects. The event, which started on 22 November, also echoed the national Day of Dictionaries and Encyclopedias.

The venue took place at the Astrakhan State University, with a support by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The project aims to improve literacy among non-Russian speakers, expanding the boundaries of the Russian language and cultural space.

International students from four Russian higher educational institutions – Perm State University (PSU), Astrakhan State University, Astrakhan State Technical University and Astrakhan State Medical University met the challenge and took part in the competition.

In teams, contestants developed projects related to Dal’s professional activity, connected to his famous Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language. The students showed creativity at making colorful presentations, selecting poems and videos, comparing proverbs and sayings in different languages. PSU Turkmenistan team offered an online quiz, based on Dal’s patterns.

PSU School of Philology, founded in 1916, has been popular over years until today. Apart from studying literature and learning languages, modern students in philology learn Internet technologies, web design, media relations, content management and create their own projects.

Among the Faculty partners are universities from Austria, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Korea, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Serbia, UK and Yugoslavia and Baltic states – running educational and research projects in Russia and overseas.

PSU Scholar Wins $1000 Award at Conference in Iran

Polina Sairanova, a post-graduate student of the Faculty of Biology, and an engineer of the Hydro-Chemical Analysis Lab at the Faculty of Geology, PSU, has entered Top 10 winners of Youth Outstanding Paper Award (YOPA) by World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC).

The YOPA WASWAC Prize aims to encourage young scientists to research the problems of soil and water conservation in the world. The award consists of a WASWAC certification and a $ 1,000 royalty. WASWAC YOPA 2021 is provided by Beijing Datum Technology Development Company, China.

This year, the award was presented at the Third International Youth Forum on Soil and Water (IYFSWC), which took place in October 2021 at Tarbiat Modares University, Iran.

The Forum’s main theme became Soil and Water Conservation under Changing Environments. Participants from Iran, China, Russia and Italy reached the finals. Polina Sairanova became the participant to represent Russia, exclusively – presenting a report “Acid footprint in brown soils of the Middle Urals”.

Polina built her research on interpretation of the data acquired in the Basegi Reserve, Russia. Soil acidity indicators are known to be key parameters to define the direction and dynamics of soil processes – allowing to estimate the ecological state of natural objects.

10 top selected papers will be published in International Soil and Water Conservation Research (ISWCR) upon experts’ positive feedback and reviewers’ corrections.

The World Association of Soil and Water Conservation (WASWAC) as the oldest worldwide academic society in the field of soil and water conservation. The aim of WASWAC is to promote the wise use of management practices that will improve and safeguard the quality of land and water resources so that they continue to meet the needs of agriculture, society and nature.

Known Robot-Builders Offer Student Internships

Imagine a situation when it is a robot doctor, who helps in a hospital or public place with assistance and navigation – greeting visitors, providing first health diagnostics, reducing coronavirus’ spread and other safety risks. Fantasy? Well, a reality, already. Besides doctor’s task, having offered such a service, the team needs to perform programming, address different audiences and language groups, as well as stay keen in hi-tech. May you take part in that? Find out more for yourself!

The Department of Linguistics and Translation, PSU, in cooperation with the Promobot are inviting students for a multilingual project to adapt robot interaction scenarios for foreigners. For students of Perm State University, this will be an officially approved internship. Invited are students with a passion for new technologies and language analysis, open- and nimble-minded.  The activity will be run in four language directions – English, German, French and Spanish. This is a long-term project, starting in December, 2021 and continuing throughout the winter and spring, 2022.

Founded in 2013 by Perm-based graduate students, the Promobot today claims to be the largest manufacturer of autonomous service robots in Russia and Europe – conducting research and production in mechatronics, electronics, artificial intelligence and neural networks, autonomous navigation, speech recognition, artificial skin and muscles, as well as human-machine interaction.

The company offers several products in a shape of a robot – an info desk manager, a promoter, a receptionist, a tour guide, an administrator, a scanner, and many more – providing connection to external systems and services. The geography of Promobot has recently expanded to 40 countries, including Armenia, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Oman, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, USA and UK.

The Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and Literature at PSU traditionally acts as a link between young translators/interpreters and city enterprises, government institutions, social and cultural initiatives looking for international cooperation. “Not does internship in translation help students to master their profession, but also connects them with a variety of experts, allowing them to sharpen skills and see prospects for future research,” emphasizes Natalya Khorosheva, Head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, PSU. “In turn, we feel our students are in demand at the city’s venues, contributing to international cultural agenda.”
